I have a Mini Pix v1.2 and a SE100 GPS unit, but can’t figure how to connect them. The Mini Pix has a 6-pin GPS/I2C socket of a type I haven’t seen before, but the SE100 has a 6-pin plug with 4 wires, and a 4-pin plug with 2 wires which I think are micro JST XH. There’s also a ‘collector’ board supplied, with a cable that connects to the Mini Pix GPS/I2C socket, but it has two 4-pin sockets on it, so no place for the SE100’s 6-pin plug, and both sockets are labelled ‘5v, SCL, SDA, GND’ anyway, so seemingly no provision for Tx and Rx from the GPS.
Instead of using the Collector board I would rather cut the plugs off the GPS and solder its wires direct to a spare 6-pin plug and cable (red, red, yellow, green, black, black) that came with the Mini Pix. From he notation on the Collector board I can guess what the 6 pins in the Mini Pix socket are (5v, Rx, Tx, SCL, SDA, and GND starting from the end nearest the big arrow), and also that green from the GPS is SCL and yellow is SDA, but I don’t know which of the orange and white wires on the other GPS plug are Tx and Rx. Can someone confirm the connections from the GPS and into the Mini Pix for me, please?
OK, after a bit of poking around with a multimeter I’ve got it sorted, so here’s what I’ve done in case anyone else has this problem:
In the Mini Pix pack was a spare 6-wire lead with a plug on one end which is compatible with the GPS/I2C socket, and bare wires at the other end. Unfortunately it has two red wires and two black, and a yellow and green, and they’re twisted so the first task was to identify the outer red and black bare wires and to check that they are in fact +5v (thereabouts) and GND when the lead is plugged into the Mini Pix.
Also in the Mini Pix pack was a ‘I2C transfer board’ which can be plugged into the Mini Pix’s GPS/I2C socket and accepts the smaller of the two plugs on the GPS unit. It has notations on its sockets showing which is SCL and SDA, so tracing those two pins back to the plug that goes into the Mini Pix I identified which were the SCL and SDA connections.
At that stage I then cut the plugs off the GPS unit and soldered its red and black wires to the spare 6-wire lead’s 5v and GND wires, which are also red and black, and checked that I had power to the GPS when I plugged it into the powered Mini Pix. I then assumed the green and yellow wires from the GPS are SDA and SCL, and soldered them to the corresponding wires I’d identified in the lead, which are green and black. I then plugged the Mini Pix into Mission Planner and verified that it was able to calibrate two compasses – external and internal.
Finally, with only two wires remaining I just guessed which was Tx and Rx, and soldered them to the lead. Got it wrong way round the first time, but swapped them over and got a good GPS fix in Mission Planner.
So to summarise, these are the connections:-
GPS red to GPS/I2C socket outer red
GPS black to GPS/I2C socket outer black
GPS green to GPS/I2C socket green
GPS yellow to GPS/I2C socket inner black
GPS orange to GPS/I2C socket yellow
GPS white to GPS/I2C socket inner red
