Connect SSC-32 v 2.01 without using serial port

Hi,

I’ve just received the Biped Brat biped kit with Flowbotic Studio

I have to say that all those parts are not well fit together. It’s really confusing following 10 years old instructions and trying to connect that old hardware to modern computers where there is NOT a serial port. Why are you still selling such old hardware mixing with software that is not recognising any of those devices?

Anyway, the question is:

Can I connect the SSC-32 v. 2.01 board to my PC using a USB to Serial adapter?
If yes, do I need to install any special driver in order to see the USB as a Com?
Once that I connect the SSC-32 to my PC with the USB adapter, which software I have to use to configure the board: the Flowbotic studio or the (old and unsupported) LinkTerminal?

Thanks
Regards
Riccardo

Hi Riccardo,

Here are answers to your comments/questions:

We assume you mean the RB-Lyn-675.

If you wish, you can always replace your SSC-32 with the newer SSC-32U. It is the same board, but with a few improvements, including: a USB port, an Bee socket, better power control/brownout prevention. You can find it [RB-Lyn-850]. We also have a [RB-Lyn-851].

Yes, you can. The recommend adapter is the RB-Sha-14. It is the one we used for tests internally and it works great. Other devices are also available, but this is by far the best one we’ve used.

If you use either the RB-Sha-14 or the SSC-32U, you will need the FTDI VCP drivers (found here). That being said, systems more recent than Windows 7 should find them automatically through the Windows Updates services.

We strongly recommend that you use FlowBotics Studio (FBS) to control your robot. You can also still use Lynxterm. It does allow for easy configuration of advanced settings of the SSC-32/SSC-32U registers.

We hope this helps.

Sincerely,
