I just got my order of servos, and while they do come with a wide variety of horns, they don’t seem to ship with the round metal ones Lynx kits need or a suitably compatible one. I was wondering, since I seem recall reading somewhere that Lynx ships horns with servos so that I didn’t have to order horns seperately. Since neither the kit nor the servos comes with horns, even if I do have to order them seperately (I’ll just put in for them with my next order), this sould be made more clear. Apollogies if it is stated cleary somewhere already and I just couldn’t find it.
If it’s not stated clearly, then it’s probably only because the metal servo horns are so new.
There should be white plastic servo horns that come with every servo that I’ve gotten, though the non-standard-sized servos have ones that are proportionally larger or smaller.
The metal servo horns are just a nice accessory for looks and, perhaps greater durability.
I’ve got 'em and like 'em, but I’ve used the white plastic ones with no issues, as well.
The metal ones are sold in two fashions; seperately for an expense and in combination with 6 servos for free.
If you desire to get them with kits in the future, the best way to do it is to buy the no-servo kit and then buy as many of the 6-servo/metal horn combos as you need.
Hi Tillin9, We provide nylon round servo horns for any servo we sell that doesn’t come with them from Hitec. I noticed you got some of the 5955 servos which we just started carrying. As Nick mentioned we do sell servo 6 packs with free aluminum servo horns, but The 5955 isn’t setup yet on the website because they are a new product for us. If you didn’t receive the round nylon servo horns, that was a mistake on our part. Your order was rather large. I will send you the tapped aluminum servo horns for your 12 5955 servos for free early next week.
That Scout is going to be one NICE bot!
Just a note on servo horns, there appear to be two different spline sizes between the servo makers. One type has one more spline than the other making the horns not interchangable. The splines look almost the same, but one has ~24 splines and the other ~25 splines. From what I’ve seen, the plastic servo horns for one type are black and the other type are white. You don’t to try to force one type of horn on to the other type of spline.
Yes, true but it’s actually three different standards. Hitec is 24 teeth. I like it because it’s a nice number to divide 360° into. 360° divieded by 24 is 15°. Futaba is 25 teeth, 360° divided by 25 is 14.4°. No biggie, but it helps with alignment changes on legs and such. The other standard is 23 teeth, but I’m not sure who owns it.
As I said, its no problem. With my SCC-32 I will have more than enough interface and programing work to keep me busy anway. Thanks for sorting it out and the prompt reply.
Nick, maybe older Hitec servos came with compatible plastic horns and the new ones do not? I actually don’t have any older Hitecs, so I can’t call it for sure. While I did get some round plastic ones roughly the right size, they don’t fit the SES drill pattern correctly and due to the large number of holes, they would be rather difficult to modify correctly. But even if I did have suitable round ones, I would have ordered the metal ones anyway due to the large weight/ high torque I plan on having in my bot. Getting them for free is just a bonus.
As far as the 5955s go, I’m very happy about their heat sinks. It’s not just a few little bands of aluminum embedded in plastic like I thought it might be from the pic, but more or less a half aluminum servo enclosure (i.e. an Aluminum case around the motor and electronics) with only plastic case parts at the ends and for the gears. While a full aluminum casing would have better heat properties, the added effective surface area would be small (as its further away from the main heat source), and you’d be hard pressed to add a bigger sink any other way while keeping the servo within size limits.
