Compatible Serial to USB cable?

I’m planning to use RIOS software running on a Sony Viao laptop to control a SES arm. Unfortunately, this computer only has USB ports (no serial) and I can’t seem to find any currently produced laptops that have a serial port. I see in the troubleshooting section that conversion cables can be a problem, so I was wondering if anyone could recommend a conversion cable that works well with RIOS.

I have read that some people like the Quatech PCMCIA card that provides a serial port. However, I’m also concerned that it may not be compatible with RIOS. Does anyone have experience running RIOS with this particular card?

If not, does anyone know where I can buy a new laptop with a serial port? Thanks!

Below is a previous discussion on usb to serial adapters. If you must have a laptop with a serial port, check the IBM, Dell, and Gateway laptops. Business grade laptops sometimes have hardware serial ports.

I found the IOgear converter works fine, and it’s only $20.00…much less than a bulky laptop that has a serial port. You can find it here at cyberguys. Sorry they won’t let me post a link but the part number & description is: Iogear USB To Serial Adapter, DB9, Guc232a

Yes, it comes with a driver, so don’t lose the cd…it’s worthless without it!
