Christmas/Birthday Shopping

I have a friend who has and Arduino Uno, but hasn't used it for anything. While he does have access to tools and soldering irons, he is reluctant to do anything with the arduino, being far more interested in programming on his computer. I want to take advantage of the holiday/his birthday, and find something that will let him apreciate the arduino. Any ideas?

Edit:

He is a freshman in high school, and is competent in electronics, and a far better programmer than I am.

     Thank you in advance, Kidbot

An arduino micro or leonardo

An arduino micro or leonardo which can use for triggering shortcuts, a potentiometer to dim the screen or turn the sound, a micro spy which opens a pop up when someone get behind him… a led which shines when you get mail, a foot mouse, an accellerometer keypad, a photo cell which makes the screen to adapt to ambient light, a usb controlled switch for tv…

And that’s just the start of my to experiment list!

Arduino uno itself it’s rather limited; the awesome begins when you start to control motors, get data from sensors and get sci fi done before it gets mainstream:)
