Choosing an evolutive robot base for my son

Hi all,

I’ve got a problem while choosing a model in the store ! there’s so many types and models that I’m affraid to choose the wrong one

Just some words to explain : I’m a software developer and I’ve started “playing” with a lot of arduino components to create a lot of things ! I really enjoy this new world !

My son is 16 years old and is like me (very found of r/c models, electronic, micro-controlers…), but do not have “theoric” knowledge ! anyway he’s always been a very good conceptor, for example when he was 10 he built a big “mecanno” robot that was able to simulate a real walk only with electric components and small motors with a r/c system (both of us are r/c planes pilots since many years so we’ve got a lot of r/c systems at home).

so my goal is to find a quite complicated robot base (not a ready to use one) to build (adaped to future extensions like mobil arm, body…) but with a lot of capabilities to add electronic features with sensors and arduino boards in the future. All this learning process will help him to get solid pratical and theorical knowledge, and maybe he’ll be interested for the future for his job…

if my english is not too bad, I think some of the members could understand what I mean and suggest a “must have” that fits with this description ?

Thank you for reading

If you don’t want a kit which results in a single model, we suggest you take a look at the Robotic Construction Kits category. If you want to use Arduino, and include a variety of sensors, then VEX or Actobotics are your best choices. Note that neither kit directly use an Arduino, but it would be fairly easy to adapt one to either kit.
