CanBus sensor for following groove

I found this forum by looking for a Lidar sensor. We are researching the ability to track a groove about 3/8" wide. Our system is Canbus based. The sensor would need to be able to handle vibration and dust. I found the Leddartech IS16 during my web search. This sensor seems to be a great fit except for the segment resolution. Would this sensor be able to sense the 3/8" groove with it being mounted about 2’ above it? Do you know of any other sensor or type of sensor that would be better for this application?

Thank you

Hi @jwestcott23 and welcome to our forum.

This sensor has of +/-5 cm, and your gap is around 1 cm so it is questionable if it will work. You could maybe buy it, try it out, and if it doesn’t work for you, you can return it under certain conditions.

But, did you consider using Industrial Machine Vision system? For example, Cognex cameras?

Yes. I have used industrial vision systems before. But i cannot find one that can communicate over Canbus. Is there a way to translate the data or is there a vision system that is Canbus compatible? Thank you for replying

Hi @jwestcott23!

Thank you for your reply.

Which controller ( PLC ?) are you using for this application?

Is CANbus only protocol that is supported?

Danfoss plus 1 controller and HMI. Canbus is the only communication protocol on the controller

Then you could maybe use CANbus adapter.

For example, Cognex camera supports Ethernet, and you could maybe use Hilsher CANbus/Ethernet adapter.

I didn’t use that exact one, but I used Hilsher’s Ethercat to UART adapter.
