Hi Folks, I have a sabertooth 2X25 which I am controlling with Arduino serial commands.
It is working wonderfully controlling 2 500 watt 24v motors using 8s LiFePO4.
My Question: can I connect a 24v to 12v transformer in parallel with the 2X25 (to power lights, sound and other fun stuff that can’t be powered from 5v). I want to Not sure with the regenerative drive?
Thanks for any ideas
Hello @ThisIsFun,
When driving an inductive load it is recommended to use a battery. A power supply is not recommended because when regenerative current from the motor is detected the protection circuit of most switching power supplies will cause it to shut down. However, if you need to use a power supply you need to have a battery with the same rated voltage connected in parallel to absorb the regenerative current.
Hi geraldinebc15, thanks for your response.
In this case I am using a 24V 8s battery.
What I want to do is connect a 24v to 12v transformer in parallel with the sabertooth to power other accessories with the same battery.

Sorry, to clarify,
the transformer is a load on the circuit, not adding power .
Oh, my bad. I misunderstood.
In that case the battery would take the reverse current and your voltage regulator should be safe. Although for added safety you could add a fuse or a shunt regulator.

Fantastic! thank you for following up. I will add a fuse. Cheers
