Can I build a drone that will follow me?

I don’t know anything about drones but am fast learning and have experience soldering electrical boards. I work on my own cars and am a welder by trade so I’m certain I can tackle anything in the build process. I’ve even built a megasquirt ecu for a car.

Really I’m just looking for recommendations for a drone kit or drone parts. Who’s good, who isn’t? And can I build a drone that can follow me and keep it’s camera aimed at me? Whether it recognized my head or maybe like some sort of device in my pocket that tells the drone where I am. I want it to autonomously follow and record me. Weather resistant would be cool too. And it needs to be indoor/outdoor capable. If I had to choose however I’d choose outdoor.

Thanks for reading. I look forward to starting a new hobby.

Hi jared8783,

If you are aiming at autonomous flight and follow-me features, you will have a lot to learn and try.
Those features will come from the Flight Controller choice and at the moment our best advise would be to use a PixHawk in Follow Me Mode.

As for the rest it depend on how far you want to build it yourself.
There are kits out there which will give you almost everything or you can go for a frame build on your own.

Sweet thanks for the info. Considering that I’ll combine this with my welding hobby and fabricate an aluminum frame. I’d like to do a combustion engine one but last I heard those were stilling being perfected enough to be practical. I understand farmers desire fossil fuel ones that can run constantly to perform chores.

The biggest problem with fossil fuel one is the slow reaction of the motors.
To keep the UAV hover, the motors are always slightly changing speed and this can’t be achieved with fossil. The way to go would be to have a main motor which drive the motor and to change Propeller pitch just like a standard Helicopter. That way you get the control needed but it’s a far more elaborate design.
