Hi,
I’m a photographer and am trying to build a rig for motion control video. I’ve never done this and I’d love some advice.
I put together a little video and did a very basic sketch which shows what I’m trying to do. You can find them both here:

Essentially, I’d like three motors which all spin a platform, I can then rig those out in different combinations. This is my first idea, one motor is attached to a tripod and allows me to rotate (pan) the whole rig. The other two motors are attached vertically allowing me to spin the product. I need there to be a ¼ screw which comes out from each motor rig so I can attach all the pieces I need to make it work.
This is the sort of thing I’m after but I’m not sure it’s powerful enough.
I need:
- Motors which are strong enough to turn product and rig
- I’d like to be able to move a product and come to a stop without seeing any wobble. I think this would mean little to no backlash from the motors
- Programmable system so I can dial in moves and have them repeat. For this I’ll probably be using the Black Forest Pine Controller
I’m a complete novice with this so I’d love any and all advice.
Thanks!
@mbridge87 Welcome to the community! Are you effectively looking for something like this?
ServoCity also has direct drive U-shaped mounts (RC servo or spur gear driven) though we don’t carry them at this time. Do motor 2 and 3 rotate the same apparatus? If so, you can get away with using just one motor on one side.
Thanks for the reply.
Apologies, I should have mentioned this from the start, I’m trying to build a rig to move the product not the camera. I’d also like that rig to be modular so I can alter it in lots of ways.
There are two products I’ve found which would do the job but I’d like to use stronger motors and hence need to build it myself. They both look pretty simple but this is such a new world to me I need some guidance.
Here is one product - https://noxon.tech/en/product/panning-module/?utm_source=rb-community&utm_medium=forum&utm_campaign=building-a-rig-for-motion-control-video
An here is another - https://blackforestmotion.com/product/nt-single-axis/
Both of those seems to use different systems, one is a worm drive I think and the other belt drive.
What I need to know is how to build something similar.
I recognise this is a lot to ask but if you can point me in the right direction that would be great.
It will be a custom system, so there will be a lot to create and consider when designing and building it. Since you’re just getting started, take a look at similar products to be inspired, like:
Worm gear system (you choose a motor):
Spur gear system (you choose a motor)
Spur gear system (you choose a servo)
We don’t currently offer any belt driven systems which you can be inspired from unfortunately, though the link you included does show the following:
Stepper motor; two timing pulleys, secondary shaft, a frame… You’d likely need a top and bottom plates to keep the shaft straight, with bearings.
The choice of actuator will dictate the electronics you need.
You might want to draw the setup first. Consider Sketchup (free) or Alibre ($99) among others…
