i have this cool idea about a pedometer/rpg gadget, that lets you advance through the game by walking/exercising. Just a simple little gadget with an lcd screen and 3 buttons (tamagotchi-esque). Think of something along the lines of what Bandai is doing and has been doing in the past. see screenshot.
i dont know anything about electronics, im willing learn though. and i know its going to take me a while. Can you recommend any books/websites to help me get started with my actual project, (ie build a 3 button Lcd pedometer device)? also what equipment and materials will i have to buy to build a prototype?
im confused but i really wanna do this :)

You would need a peizoelectric pad
in the sole of the shoe. most are flexible and light. use a MCU to count the number of steps by constantly checking the pad.
The problem with this idea
The problem with this idea is that you’d need a long wire running down from your pocket/belt to your shoe; somewhat inconvenient at best.
You’ll find most electronic pedometers use something like a mercury/ball contact tilt switch or a springy contact switch to detect the sudden change in vertical acceleration at each step. My suggestion would be to find a cheap $2 pedometer and bust it open. That way you can see what they’ve come up with, and salvage some of the more useful parts.

I think it doesnt have to be that accurate, a simple waggle-detector would suffice. im going to go and get a pedometer and check out its insides. like i mentioned earlier, i have no knowledge about how electronics work or what elements are needed for such an undertaking.
can you recommend a starting resource?
i guess im going to be quite
i guess im going to be quite puzzled when trying to identify the innards of the pedometer im buying…
