to make the introduction short:
I read a lot about hexapods and since a few weeks I got addicted by the idea of making one.
My programming skills are basic, but I will take the challenge to improve that .
Enough introduction.
What I have by now is a rough idea, how the crab should look like, a bunch of 645mg arrived two days ago, together with a ssc32 and I think of getting a botboard and a basic atom pro aswell.
As I want to manufacture as much parts as possible by myself, I startet to experiment yesterday with some measurements and ideas, how to make the brackets, leg lengths, etc.
I used some Plaast (known as shapelock in USA) to fix everything.
This is just to get a rough idea, what and how to draw next, until I waste my precious materials on the CNC.
I think the crossbrackets for the servo fix are ok, but the legs are about twice too long.
What I noticed is a bit of backlash in the servos. As these are the first servos I buy in that price rangeā¦ I didnāt expect that. Is this normal?
As I am starting almost from scratch, any help or advice in getting the hinges done and some basic measurements are appreciated .
Look for 5052 H32, itās good for parts that have breaks. 6061-T6 is popular but it does not bend well. 1.5mm should be thick enough. But not sure with this design as the bends are in pretty narrow places.
Actually I donāt know the origin of that sheet . Itās some piece I dragged from somewhere and that spent most of itās existence in a dark placeā¦ I guess itās just the usual hardware store stuff, too.
I got some AlMg3 (5754) in 1.5mm and 2.5mm sheets, too, but as these are black poweder coated, I donāt use them for experiments. They will get their turn with the final plan.
(Just learned that 5052 and 5754 are pretty much the same, but oneās used in USA, the otherās in Europe.)
Yes, the bends are pretty close to each other, and I donāt know, if they need to.
Iāve tried to get the leg width centered to the coxa servo axle. (Does this sentence make sense? ).
I just thought this might make further calculations in pointing the leg anywhere easier, if I have no offsets to the turning angle here.
The next version will have some slight changes, that should work out most problemsā¦ just have to keep in mind, that I am not building a tank . Still got some time to try out a few things, until my bearings arrive.
Thatās why itās often better to just buy the brackets (they get a lot more ātuningā) then making your own. Unless, of course, you need something really special.
Iām surprised that 1.5mm (.060") aluminum, even 6061-T6 wouldnāt work for you. I use it all the time.
