Botley 2.0 doesn't turn the full 90 degrees (or 45 degrees)

Hi!

I require your help regarding a problem I’m encountering.

Description:
My son got a Botley 2.0 for Christmas, and when we play with it, the robot doesn’t turn the full 90 degrees (or 45 degrees) with the relevant commands. It turns a good chunk less, meaning that if you do 4 left or right turns in a row then it ends up only turning ~315 degrees. This makes it quite hard to do any challenges with because after a while the robot has drifted off the course you’re imagining it will go in.

We have tried on both carpet, hard floors, tables, etc. It happens on all of them.

Hardware concerned: Botley 2.0

Software concerned: n/a

Troubleshooting steps already taken:
I’ve tried brand new non-rechargable AAA batteries from a reputable brand (Duracell).

Additional information: n/a

Thank you so much in advance for your help!

Hi @mattjgalloway and welcome to our forum.

You can see some troubleshooting steps here: https://www.robotshop.com/media/files/content/l/ler/pdf/botley2_activity_guide.pdf

If Botley isn’t moving properly, check the following:
• Be sure Botley’s wheels can move freely and nothing is
blocking movement.
• Botley can move on a variety of surfaces, but works best
on smooth, flat surfaces like wood or flat tile.
• Do not use Botley in sand or water.
• Be sure fresh batteries are inserted properly in both
Botley and the Remote Programmer.

If nothing helps, we recommend that you write to manufacturer on [email protected].

I had the same problem as described by OP. Brand new Botley 2.0 turns slightly more than 90° turning right, and slightly less going left.

This totally ruins any of the more advanced routines, which is why we bought the Botley.

Support was no help. They just sent a replacement Botley which had the exact same problem.

I’ve tried all the troubleshooting steps in the manual and as described in this thread. I feel like there must be a way to take this thing apart and adjust the turning so that it turns straight. Anybody tried it or figured it out? Also, are they ALL like this? Is the company just lying about being able to do advanced routines?

Hi @brenton and welcome to our forum!

Maybe it would be interesting if you open up your Botley and try to swap the motor and encoder cables and see what happens?

I guess the problem would be the same just on the opposite sides.

And I would guess that the problem is calibration of the motors.
