Blue light flashes robot litter does not auto reset

Hi!

I require your help regarding a problem I’m encountering.

Litter Robot 3, unit does not auto reset after cycle. After cycling, the blue light continues to flash and not reset. This happens whether or not the bag is full, empty or even the drawer not inserted. The unit will reset when I press reset. The unit would recognise when a cat had visited and cycle (but not reset) but since yesterday, I have to press reset to get the solid blue light otherwise the unit will not cycle after a visit.
I have tried the calibration with my hand which doesn’t help. Is there anything else I can do?

Hardware concerned:

Software concerned:

Troubleshooting steps already taken: Unplugged, recalibrate sensor

Additional information: Unit was at service centre in april this year, it doesn’t work the way it did when new. Still under warranty.

Thank you so much in advance for your help!

Hello @Neilmcleod,

Thank you for contacting RobotShop support.

We are sorry to hear that you are having trouble with your Litter-Robot.

We have checked the previous conversation we had with you and we have suggested sending the unit back to the repair center for a second repair on the center’s cost but we haven’t received a reply since then.

About your new issue, the re-calibration method only works with the connect version so it wouldn’t work with your robot.

Did this issue start to appear recently or since you have received the robot back from the repair center?

Can you provide us with some pictures of the DFI sensor connection on the board?

Sincerely,

Hello

When I got the unit back it didn’t work correctly at all, but I found a piece of sticky clear polythene stuck on one of the clear windows which sit in front of the ‘full’ sensor. Then the unit started working and cycling although intermittently the blue light would not return to solid blue even if the tray wasn’t full. Even with this issue the machine cycled when the cats visited, but that has changed. Now the tray won’t turn when a cat visits, but I think it may turn even when there hasn’t been a cat visiting.

There have been a few times when I have found the unit stalled in mid-cycle

When powering on (even with no tray) the blue light flashes, when reset is pressed, the yellow light comes on and the machine cycles.

I have attached images of the sensors and connection to board.

Thanks
Neil

Hello @Neilmcleod,

Thank you for your reply.

The DFI sensor’s connection is normal.

You can test if the DFI sensor is working properly or not by watching the IR LEDs on the DFI circuit board through your phone’s camera.

You should be able to see 4 IR LEDs blinking together every one second.

If one or more of these LEDs aren’t blinking then the DFI sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced.

About the globe getting stuck mid-cycle:

When this happens, does the yellow light flash slowly or fast?

Sincerely,

Hello,
I cycled the machine, without the tray inserted and watched the 2 curcuit boards, I didn’t see any leds coming on at all.

As for the stalling, it can be a mixture of flashing and solid yellow lights when I find it, i.e. sometimes flashing, others solid.

Thanks
Neil

Hello @Neilmcleod,

The LEDs are located on the left side board:

You can’t see them blink with your eyes, you have to look through your phone’s camera like this video:

As for the yellow blinking and solid lights:

When it’s blinking, is it fast or slow blinking? once or twice per second?

Sincerely,

Hi
When the yellow light blinks, it is slow blinking, once per second.
I viewewd the LEDs on the left board, only 3 of them flash. The rearmost one does nothing, not on at all.
Neil

Hello @Neilmcleod,

Thank you for your reply.

Very well, in this case the DFI sensor needs to be replaced.

As for the slow blinking yellow light, please try the following:

Please test if the night light is interrupting your cycle. Cover the light sensor which is located under the power button. If the night light turns on and the cycle is interrupted, then your bonnet needs to be replaced.

It is possible that the night-light is not even working, in this case, please remove the power from the robot and unclip the bonnet. Inside the bonnet, you will see 2 wires connected to a small circuit. Make sure the wires are well connected to the circuit.

If that is working fine, then the problem is probably with the connection between the base and the bonnet. Have a look at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyUuSGSgn1A&t

Also, there are two connection metal pins between base and bonnet. Some customers use WD-40 to clean them to make better contact.

Please tell us how this goes.

Sincerely,

Hello Ebram
The night light is on most of the time as the unit is located in a dimly lit room. However I shone my phone torch on the sensor and the nightlight went out. Covering up the sensor didn’t have any visible effect. The connection looks ok.
The connection beterrn the bonnet and the base looks ok too but I will spray it anyway.

What do we do about the DFI sensor?

Neil

Hello @Neilmcleod,

Thank you for your reply.

If the light in this area isn’t so bright then covering the sensor won’t change the status of the nightlight since it’s already on.

But now we know that it’s working when you point the flashlight from the phone to the light sensor.

Let us know if the issue persisted after you clean the pins with WD-40 or not, you can try to move the bonnet to the left a little to make sure that the connections are well connected.

As for the DFI sensor, we are waiting to make sure that all the other part of the unit is okay and you don’t need anything else, so we can send what you need along with the DFI sensor.

Let us know how it goes.

Sincerely,

Hello,
The unit seems to be rotating as it should just now. The problem being that I have to press reset everytime it cycles or it won’t cycle the next time a cat visits. As for stopping mid-cycle, this hasn’t happened for a week or so now, I have done everything you suggested and it all seems to work. I even deliberately caused it to pause during a cycle which caused the yellow light to flash slowly for about 10 seconds then it restarted and completed (with a flashing blue light).
For the times when it stalled, it wasn’t a simple process to restart. I switched off at the panel and back on, which used to cause the unit to start a cucle, but at the moment the first thing that happens is that the blue light flashes and a cycle won’t start until reset is pressed. I recall having to remove the power for a minute then power on and press reset.
Neil

Hello @Neilmcleod,

Thank you for your update.

That’s great, so now the only issue is a blue blinking light at the end of each cycle.

This is due to the faulty DFI sensor that needs to be replaced.

Please provide us with your order number to check your warranty status.

Sincerely,
