Best Ultrasonic sensor for UGV

I am supervising an undergrad project this year by the title “UGV for surveillance with Optimum Path Planning”. For the Path planning function, we require sensors that could tell the exact distance of an obstacle from the UGV at different angles. Currently, we are using Ultrasonic sensors which have the limitation that their measurement range is not that much and also the directivity is narrow which does not give the distance information at wider angles.

Kindly guide me by letting me know about any laser, optical or other sensors that can solve this issue, i.e.

  1. They have a larger measurement distance range.
  2. They can measure accurate or closely accurate distance for the whole 180 degrees in front of the UGV.
  3. We can view or extract the value of the distance from the obstacle in cm, mm or m with relative ease.

Please guide me to get the best fit for my project.

A laser scanner is an ideal sensor for your needs, provided you have the budget. Most scan over 240 degrees over long distances and offer exception accuracy. The main differences between the models are:

  • Range
  • Angle
  • Accuracy / resolution
  • Voltage (though that’s rarely a determining factor)
  • Output method (almost all are USB, though some are serial for easier connection to a microcontroller)
