Best stepper driver for 36JXS60K-42STH38-1684

Hello,

I am currently trying to drive the 36JXS60K-42STH38-1684 model of bipolar stepper motor. The motor will only be on for short bursts, it will not be on continuously. It’s maximum current/phase rating is 1.68A. I am between picking the Allegro A4988 stepper driver and the RB-ITE-53 Stepper driver. As I understand it, the Allegro A4988 driver has a higher maximum current of 2A and can output a stable 1 - 1.5 A if cooled with a heatsink, whereas the RB-ITE-53 has a maximum rating of 750mA, but I cannot find the continuous current or a datasheet for this product. Am I right in leaning towards the A4988 driver, as it is designed for a bipolar motor and it’s continuous current is 1-1.5 A? I am interested in using the controller for eighth-stepping the motor.

Essentially you are considering the following two (both inexpensive):
robotshop.com/en/8-35v-2a-si … RB-Pol-235
robotshop.com/en/pololu-sing … RB-Pol-176
robotshop.com/en/pololu-8-35 … RB-Pol-273
vs
robotshop.com/en/dual-steppe … =RB-Ite-53

As you can see, we carry the A4988 as breakout boards alone, whereas RB-Ite-53 is a shield. note too that the max current PER STEPPER is 750mA - using one stepper by sending the same signal to both channels may eventually fail. As such, it’s bes tto choose a chip which can provide 2A.
