Best Battery Pack for RP5 Chassis

HI,

I have my first working rover using a PICAXE 40x controlling a RP5 Chassis. The chassis allows 6 AA batteries inside however I was hoping to get the batteries smaller so I can use some of the room inside the chassis.  I am fast running out of room

What batteries have people used in the RP5 Chassis before.  I would probably preffer NiMH as I have a charger, however sizes seem to be a problem.

Make some decks for the robot, so you can also build vertically. I wouldn’t reduce size down any smaller from AA, since AA has a current of around 2500mAH, and AAA (next size that is freely available) has around 900mAH.

Thanks,

your right I’ll have to put another story onto the platform.  The PICAXE 40x and servo takes alot of the current deck and I want to add an LCD and compass module and wireless 433mhz tx.

I got some 3mm perspex sheet today to make a better deck.  Plan is to cut it out and bend it so that I can mount an LCD at the rear and servo at the front.

Have you decided on what

Have you decided on what battery configuration you will use? Personally, go for something over 7 volts, so you can use inexpensive 5VDC regulators.

Looks like I will stick to

Looks like I will stick to the 6 x AA pack withint he chassis.  Its been running like that for some time now, battery life is good.  I was after some more room within the chassis itself however decided to biuld a custom deck.  I have been playing around to try and create a “hot wire” strip which will heat up enough so that I can bend some acrylic sheet (Perspex).  I got some nichrome wire arcoss 12V and it should do the trick, glows red hot.
