Banebots P60 for lawn mower drive

I am working on a creating a robot lawn mower and wanted to see if anyone had comments on the banebots p60 and rs555 motors (RBO-73). I want to use 2 of these as drive/steering motors in a tripod layout. Although I think these motors and gearbox at 256:1 will have enough torque I am worried about having the weight of the mower carried by the 2 motors and 1.5" shaft. With that short shaft there is almost no way to support the shaft on the other end.

Has anyone used these motors and have any comments? I also considered the robot power gearmotor (RB-Rop-07) since it has a longer shaft but the amperage is very high for that motor. The torque at 300oz-in is borderline too.

Yes I used that tool and I came up with 300 oz-in motors. I plan on using lighter batteries. I know the gearbox will have the torque but I am worried about the connecting the wheels directly and have the motors support the weight of the mower. That is why I want a longer shaft on the motor and use a pillow block on the other end. This may be overkill though.

A pillow block would be good except I would need a very skinny wheel to have enough shaft on the other side. A skinny wheel may not work good on the lawn of the ground is soft. I may need to use a skinny wheel anyway since the banebots shaft is too short. I am trying to find out if I can get some with a longer shaft.

Yes I tried to special order the longer shaft but that is not an option I was told.

Does anyone have another gearmotor suggestion?

Yes I considered that one. It has a much higher current draw and the rpm is too high. I will use a speed controller anyway so the rpm shouldn’t be a problem. The current is an issue at 3.6A no load it will be bad at near the 300 oz-in.

If the banebots use ball bearings in their gearbox then I can try the shaft unsupported and see how long it lasts.

Ok thanks for your help!

Did you get some results from the Drive Motor Sizing Tool?
Two important considerations are the incline the robot will need to climb, and if you plan to use lead acid batteries.
The P60 gear boxes should be good for most smaller sized lawn mowers.

Hope this helps,

The pillow block idea is a good one, or keep the wheel as close to the gear box as possible. NiMh or LiPo batteries would help reduce the weight.

Hi,

Banebots offers longer shafts though they are special order at the moment. To get a quote, contact us via the Support Center and indicate the specifications you need (gear ratio, motor, shaft type and length). The shaft options are:
3/8" x 1.5" long or 3" long
1/2" x 1.5" long or 3" long
1/2" hex

Hope this helps,

Was the order amount above $100? RB-Rop-07 would be a good alternative.

Sincerely,

They do. Keep the wheel close to the gear box.
