Ball-bearing cleaning head module for Dirt Dog

I just got a Dirt Dog and after one day of use, I have already had to dismantle the gear box and remove burnt, melted pet hair from the plastic gears :frowning: I was wondering if you could tell me if any of the new bearing cleaning head modules would fit the Dirt Dog? Thanks!!

Thank you Vayvazyan!
I have a new routine with my dirt dog. I let it clean for about 15-20 minutes then flip it over, pull off the brushes and pry all of the trapped hair from the spinning gears. This seems to keep it from clogging and burning up the gears, just a bit of a pain in the butt.
This is my second dirt dog, the first didn’t even make it the full 16 hour charge. Irobot happily replaced it, but I am loath to pay fedex more money just to send it in and have the same faulty gearbox installed. I believe I will just buy replacement gears and the cleaning head module from the robot shop. Thanks again!

Hi Vayvazyan,
I have an EXTREAM amount of pet hair, which is one of the reasons I thought the dirt dog would be a better choice then a Roomba. I own a Newfoundland dog that sheds in clumps, and a golden retreiver mix that sheds tons of long, fine hair. Mostly, it is the Newfoundland’s hair I find getting into the gear box. I have a very large open house that is all hardwood, and grew tired of sweeping daily just to keep it respectable. I thought the dirt dog was an answer to my prayers, and I do enjoy watching it bumble about. But I do believe you are correct…perhaps if I shave my Newfie…

Good morning morab,

Welcome to the RobotShop Forum!

For the Dirt Dog, it is in the same series as the Discovery series robots, while the modules you speak of are for the 500 series robots. So the two would not be compatible together. However we do have parts for the Discovery series as well. Please see the parts available for the main brush casing here.

Now of course, if your robot is still new, you should have a warranty on it that we advise you pursue; you’d need to contact the distributor you bought it from, or iRobot directly.

Hope this helps. Let us know what else you need.

Good afternoon morab,

It seems a little unusual that your robot is getting hair into the casing gears so quickly after such a short run time. Do you have an abnormally high amount of hair to pick up? The robots work well when they can maintain the level of cleanliness. If there is a lot of debris, it may be that you need to manually remove some of the dirt/hair to pick up so the robot can run regularly to maintain the area it’s cleaning, and so it doesn’t have such a large amount of debris to pick up all at once.
