my graduate class is trying to build a autonomous vehicle like in the DARPA competition. Do you know what specific LIDAR did the winner use of the DARPA competition - was it similar to the SRI500 Precision 3D Laser Scanner for $55K?
What are the limitations if we purse a cheaper scanner besides a 360 degree view?
thank you
Unfortunately we don’t know exactly which model was used by the winning team, though you should be able to find images of it online, and likely references in papers which they published. RB-Acu-01 is used for exactly that reason and would be a great product to use as the main sensor in an autonomous vehicle. You need to check distance, accuracy, range and scan time. Also, if the sensor is made to be stationary or can be subject to some vibration.
You would likely add three or four additional 2D scanners to the from and sides, and if you really wanted to be certain, a few weatherproof ultrasonic distance sensors.
