Autodesk enters the hobby market!

Didn’t know if anyone has seen this: hackaday.com/2011/06/10/autodesk … more-45388

Here is the Autodesk site: 123dapp.com/

Have these links worked for anyone?

Yes. I was able to download the program and install it (takes some time). It also takes rather a long time to start the program each time.

Then I ran several of their YouTube tutorials which seemed to work flawlessly.

When I progressed to their lengthier video tutorials, the first worked fine. The others showed video, but did not play sound even after several tries each. This was disconcerting because the tutorial I really wanted, the one on using outside content, played silently.

The crucial issue to me was whether I could use the 3D files available from Lynxmotion. Not knowing any better, I tried downloading a few and opening them in Autodesk123D. I found it easier to create a special folder for them where I could store the files and unzip the .zip files. I didn’t find a way to open them directly from the internet. To my relief, I found that files in STEP and .obj format do open and can be rotated in the program viewer.

Now I will have to learn the program in order to assemble the parts into things.

NOTE to you CAD geniuses out there: We could use some updated models such as:
BB2 with BAP28
T-HEX and other new chasses
Sensors & wi-fi cameras
New SES brackets
Printable currency in monetary systems of your choice to pay Lynxmotion to send us stuff.

yes i managed to download it in about 40mins, and it took about 1 min to open the program. but with that said its a great little program.

40 min! :open_mouth: What kind of connection do you have Jonny?
My download took 1min and 45 sec… :stuck_out_tongue:

Nice find Jim, thanks for letting us know!

iv been wondering that too.

prob didnt help that i was running a few programs. T******s!

Ah, the t…'s might explain it.

Ok so i thought id share some very important information if anyone is using or is thinking of using Autodesk123D and Shapeways for printing 3D models…

123D uses internal units of Centimeters. When uploading STL files to Shapeways, it will ask you whether the file you’re uploading is stored in Inches, Millimeters or Meters (however Centimeters is not an available option).Â

You can work around this in 123D by scaling your model by a factor of 10x then exporting it as STL, and choosing Millimeters as the option on the Shapeways page.Â

i found this out the hard way…

so just remember that 123D exports its stl files x10 smaller.

Hope this reaches you in time so you don’t end up expecting a 120mm part but get a 1.20cm part. Lol
