Attaching gearboxes to motors

Good morning all. Stuck at home during the pandemic and I introduced my kids to battlebots. As an old fart who loved the show 20 years ago, it was great to see them love it now. Needless to say, they’re interested in building a robot now. I am comfortable doing all of the machining and have the proper equipment there. I’ve made a few drones over the years, so generally knowledgeable about the electronics. The one area that is new to me a bit is the drivetrain.

Im located in Colorado and stumbled onto BaneBots and would love to support them. Im looking at their P61 gearbox on the robotshop site, probably want to hook it up to around a 1000kv motor. The info on the gearbox all says that it will hook up to a RS-5XX or RS-700 motor, which I assume is the hole configuration on the motor, but I havent seen anything on any spec for motor that says this. Can anyone give me a quick kick in the pants to get me pointed in the right direction here?

Hi @twopecker and welcome to our forum!

RS-5XX, RS-700, RS-etc. are motor types by Banebots. You can see it on their website: http://www.banebots.com/category/MOTORS.html

We have several of them in our catalog:

Thanks. Looking for a bit different motor than those, brushless, and a little more widely available. Do I just need to machine my own plate to attach to the gearbox and top of the motor then? Are the hole patterns on the top of those standard dimension, like 25mm or anything?

Hey @twopecker,

If you buy P61 gearbox from RobotShop, you get Mounting Kit and Pinion with it. Which mounting kit and pinion you get, depends on the gearbox type you buy (gearbox for RS-700 motor, gearbox for RS-550 motor, etc).

You can find 3D models of the gearboxes and these mounting kits on manufacturers website. Based on it, you can see hole dimensions and their layout.

If you find one that fits your motor (which is not from Banebots) that’s good. If not, you can always, as you already said, machine your own mounting plate.

Looks like the spacing on the RS-500 series are 25mm. Could you confirm I could pick out the RS-500 version of the 16:1 gearbox and the spacing on the adapter plate is 25mm. Also, Im assuming you can select pinion size? I would need one for a 5mm shaft.

Hi @twopecker,

I’ve marked you some dimensions on a mounting plate for RS-500.

dimensions

Regarding the pinion. It is P61 pinion for gearbox with a first stage of 4:1 - 3.2mm press fit. Works with RS-540, RS-545, RS-550, RS-555 and similar motors with a 3.2mm shaft.

Specifications
For Gearbox First Stage : 4:1 (4.00:1 Actual Reduction)
Number Teeth : 15
Gear Specs : 0.6Mod, 20PA
Gear Material : Cold Rolled Steel
Installation : Interference (press) fit
Bore : 3.2mm

Great, thank you for this. I dug around on their site and couldn’t find these models. Absolutely could just be missing it though!

Do you sell 15 tooth 5mm bore pinions or would I need to order those elsewhere? Any reason that wouldn’t work? Assuming they would have the same diameter.

We have a https://www.robotshop.com/en/servocity-32-pitch-5mm-bore-gearmotor-pinion-gear.html but I don’t think it will work.
