I am building a Lynx 5 Arm, and have a question about assembling the elbow/hinge. The assembly guide states to attach the forearm to the uprights with a ball bearing and steel screw (Step 12). However the screw has nothing to bite into. The hole in the plastic hinge does not grab the screw. I am wondering if I was to attach a washer and nut to the inside of the plastic hinge before I attached it with the double-sided tape. The guide did not say to do anything like that. I looked at previous versions of the assembly guide and the hinges seem to have nuts built-in.
Any suggestions? I am thinking I need to pull the plastic hinge off and insert a nut. Now that the double-sided tape has take hold can I remove the hinge without doing damage?
If I remember rightly, the old injection-molded hinges have a plastic protrusion coming out of them.
The newer ones for the ball-bearings have a nut already attached on the inside and a hole where the protrusion used to be.
If there’s not a bolt in there already, then it’s probably a mistake.
I’m sure that Jim (Robo Dude, that is) will be contacting you soon to work that out.
In the meantime, if you’ve got an extra bolt that fits, it should work fine.
That is what I was afraid of (that a nut should already be attached to the hinge cover). I have already attached the plastic hinge with the double-sided tape. Can I remove the plastic hinge to add the nut? I am concerned whether I will damage the hinge by removing it.
Uhh… I can’t see why you shouldn’t be able to take it appart.
To my knowledge, all of Jim’s products were made to be taken appart and put together multiple times.
The double-sided foam tape is pretty strong, but it should come off easily enough.
If your fingers aren’t up to the task, prying with a large slotted screwdriver should do it.
Just checked the assembly guide and it does mention you need to insert the nut into the hold before applying the double sided tape. We added that step quite a while ago. Not sure why you’re not seeing it.
Yes you need to remove the tape and insert the nut. Nick is correct, if you take a large flat blade screw driver inbetween the plastic part and the servo, give it a twist, then it will pop off. If the tape is damaged it is the standard 3M stuff you find at all of the hardware, home improvement and, office supply shops.
I was assembling this item and was wondering about the exact positioning of the bearing, Seems that it mostly goes on the outside of the arm? (as opposed to being between the servo and the lexan?
Not sure what you’re asking here. If you are having trouble with an assembly guide please provide a link to the assembly guide and note the step you are having trouble with.
So you want me to quote the manual huh? well it is
Figure 13 of lynxmotion.com/images/html/build09c.htm showes it very clearly…
The screw goes through the ball bearing with the big part on the outside against the arm and into the servo hinge of the forearm.
Um . very clear, now why I had trouble? is I was trying to outguess the manual…
