Arduino mega issue

Hi everyone,
I’m new to this web site and also to robotics so please bare with me, I have a arduino mega 2560 and a mega sensor shield version 2.

When I installed the sensor shield onto the arduino mega board the feet where the power selector has been soldered touched the outer casing on the USB connector and cased a short on the board which in turn burnt out the little component ( I’m guessing resistor) next to the USB connector.

I have fixed the cause of the problem but would like to know if I can still use the arduino mega with this component issue.

Thanks

Here’s what I came up

Here’s what I came up with.

First that component isn’t in the current Eagle files that I could find. I looked at the board in the layout editor and couldn’t find anything beside a couple caps near the location, and they didn’t match the position of your image.

Second my Arduino Mega board doesn’t match yours exactly either, nor does IT match the Eagle files from the Arduino website, but I did at least have a similar component in the same location.

When I measured the resistance in-circuit it read less than 2 ohms, so I don’t think it’s a resistor (though it isn’t certain when measuring in-circuit).

I did find THIS pdf schematic that had an EMI inductor near that location that I THINK is your winner (BLM21). That would make sense to the low resistance. Also google images shows it to look exactly like an SMD resistor.

Maybe someone more knowledgable than me could chime in as to whether or not the board would still be usable if it does turn out to be an inductor, but I’d have to recommend replacing the part as well. Most electronics aren’t designed with parts that it doesn’t need/shouldn’t have.

Good luck, let us know what you find.

Great thanks for all the
Great thanks for all the information I shall replace the component.

Thanks again.
