have any of you guys found any mecanum wheels? I would like to build an rc rover (yes I know, not a real robot) and my FIRST team’s (1014 woot) robot this year has mecanum wheels, and after having driven it, I would like to get a smaller, more manageable robot that can do the same job. thanks guys. oh and as far as size, between 4-6 inches. thanks alot

From what I can tell the omniwheel is more popular in robots, and there is a small version.
I realize the omniwheel is more popular, but I would like to stick with a boxish chassis and still be able to move in any direction. thanks for the link though!
Here is one source for them, but they are NOT inexpensive… You have to buy a complete set of four wheels.

Edit: Oh I misread the post, nvm.
well, Ideally It would be around 2 feet long, and 6" would work, although finding the cash for this could be hard…
One might find large wooden “beads” at a local craft store to use for the mecanum wheel rollers. If one wanted to have a multi-directional capability, one might put each wheel/drive on a controlled 90 deg rotatable mount.
edit: maybe make that a 180 deg mount.
Just because you have an omniwheel does not mean that your chassis has to be non-rectangular.
Just mount the weels at 45 degree angles in the corners, and your bot will hold still when you want, and drive where and however you want when commanded.
You only need the mecanum wheels if ‘lined up’ wheels are aesthetically important.
do the contact points of the wheels have to form a square? I know mecanums don’t, but I have never used omni wheels in an any direction format.
No, you can mount omni wheels just about anywhere, it only changes the trig you need to drive them.
The only important thing with the omnis is that you align the axles in such a way as to make sure the chassis can’t slide around unpowered. (45 degree mounting does that…)
OK, reanalyzed what I want to do, and I have decided that treads would be better suited. but I need some monster motors. I found some RS540 BaneBot planetary gear motors for a good price, however they use a 10mm shaft, any ideas on how to use the 6mm hubs on this? thanks again, I didn’t want to post another thread just because I cant make up my mind. thanks guys.
scratch that, ok, I guess this thread is null, either let it die or mods delete please. thanks for all the help and sorry for jumping around so much.
I’ve been thinking about using omniwheels as casters for W.A.L.T.E.R. (one front and one rear), but probably won’t do that for some time.

Threads never die here - they just go off topic…

COOKIES!?
how do calculate speeds with tank treads? yes, another topic
If you use omnis for casters only, then you don’t need to worry how they are aligned. (because your two drive wheels will prevent the robot from ‘strafing’.) You only need to worry about how omniwheels align when they are the drive wheels as well.
Use the same formula as regular wheels, exept the diameter you use is the the diameter of your drive sprocket.
I know this is an old topic, but I was wondering if anyone has used nexus mecanum wheels on a lyxmotion rover before? if not, do you think it’s possible?
Have not tested them here, but don’t see why they would not work.
