Analog sensors - homebrew jumpers?

hi

I want to interface my sonar to the SSC-32, I understand how to wire it up but I have no jumpers!!! :imp:

buddy at the electronics store said he had no such thing to make my own!?!?

what are you guys doing to build jumper cables to interface to pin ports?

Neil

If you really need jumpers, you should be able to salvage some from old computer gear. Hard drives, CD-ROMs, and motherboards routinely use the 0.1" IDC jumpers you need. You can also buy them from many places online if need be.

However, I have a feeling you want IDC cables (imagine the three pins like servos use). You can salvage these from computers too. Many types of CD-ROM audio cables will work but they may be hard to find if you need a bunch. In that case, it’s probably best you buy them. Lynx sells the IDC pins, they’re called female crimp pins in the cables section, along with the appropriate crimper. I didn’t know there was a crimper till I saw it here, I had been using a pair of plairs with much frustration; that said I highly suggest you get the crimper if you need to make a lot of these.

The IDC hoods (highly recommended to prevent accidental shorts and debugging woes), you need to find elsewhere. I remember a similar thread where someone was asking if Lynx carried something like that. If that has changed, please correct me. If not, I would suggest going to Jameco as I’ve ordered similar parts there. You can either get the hoods in the size you need (probably two, three, or four pin) or get some large ones (like 20 pin) and use an exacto knife to cut 'em down to what you need.

You also might want to look into IDC 0.1" breakaway headers. Again I believe Lynx doesn’t carry them. They’re the male pins that mate with the crimpable ones. This might be good for that power header you’re planning to make.

If you need something to slip on to header pins, you may be able to make the jumpers out of regular pin jumpers. The link below shows how I’ve done this in the past. More recently I just put the wire into one of the jumper bottom pin holes and soldered it, then sliped the other jumper pin hole over the pin. The jumper wire is just cat3 phone wire.

You can make jumpers with this kit.

or you can make jumpers from any of the servo extender cables, or for that matter any of the cables on this page. lynxmotion.com/Category.aspx?CategoryID=44
If it doesn’t match your needs exactly you can modify them…
