An unusual project for someone creative

Hello,
My name is Vincent and I recently began building model ships out of wood. Here is a sample of one I’m working on now.

One of the details of a model ship is the rope. Making rope to scale is time consuming and requires the use of a machine to do it correctly. It is called a ropewalk machine.

Here is an example of one type of machine that can be purchased, however the company no longer makes them.

If you Google ropewalk machine or look in YouTube you’ll see other styles, but the one in the link seems to be the best because it doesn’t take up much room.

I think building this type of unit wouldn’t be that difficult if some knew what parts to buy. I’m not familiar with what is available, but I think I’d need some type of frame, 4 basic gears, a motor to drive the unit and various spools and connectors.

If anyone on this forum has any ideas about how to go about this it would be appreciated.

I know it’s not high tech, but interesting nonetheless. Building units for sale is probably not very lucrative since it is obviously a limited market but if it could be built with a reasonable price tag I think other ship modelers around the world would be interested.

Thank you,
Vincent

Very nice boat. That type of machine will certainly take some design and unfortunately we do not specialize in that field. It’s essentially the same as a company might use to combine three electrical wires into one. Perhaps someone from the community might offer some additional insight.
