Aluminum chassis for H3-R robots

How about a titanium body and wire spaceframe legs.

I received the samples today. Wow am I impressed. Looks like I’m going to be going aluminum crazy around here. I need to install them onto my AH3-R first, but I can’t think of any reason this will not work.

Killer. Ok, now I’m pretty much begging you to make .12" aluminum C legs! An all-aluminum CH3-R would be the hottest bot kit on the market, period. I’m ready to buy, waiting …

I’m working on it. Due to the thicker material the first quote was as much as the top or bottom panels for just one leg part. I may need to go two 0.06" parts instread of one 0.125" part.

That’s great news!

I’m surprised about the pricing of the .125" parts. What grade of aluminum is it? You might want get competing bids if you didn’t already.

I think two pieces would still be very cool though.

It’s quoted for 6061 T6, but I think 5052 H32 would do equally well for a lot less money. I’m still waiting on some RFQ’s.

Hmm, I was hopeing red anodized 7000 series aircraft aluminum but it looks really good.

You know, I was kicking around the idea of sending complete AH3-R part kits to be anodized purple, red, gold, green, etc. Maybe a dozen at a time. The price would be more though. You think they would sell?

That would be neat, but you have to consider that you don’t sell individual parts in colors.

I think it would be cooler to just pick one color and do the whole SES in a third color. That way people can get replacement parts, add arms, build humanoids, etc etc.

I think red or gold would be the most popular for robots, but you have to be careful with colored anodization. I know from the RC stuff that there can be a lot of variation in a color from one vendor to another, and reds often look pinkish if the anodization is not very good. Most of the RC anodization is blue, and not all the blues match exactly. But if you get one high quality reliable vendor then you should be fine.

Gold might be a good choice since it kind of matches the Lynxmotion color scheme, and it would mix well with black or silver for bi-color bots.

Personally, I’d rather see the immediate effort go towards making all the tubes, connectors and channels available in anodized black to match the other SES parts that are already available in black.

One more thing, I think it would be great if you could somehow manage to stick with 6061 T6 for the new parts and keep the prices reasonable. T6 is really light and strong, and I think it would be a selling point for discriminating aluminum enthusiasts. Also the CrustCrawler is made from 5052 so you might want to pick a higher grade …

FYI aluminum hop-ups for RC vehicles are always made from 6061 T6.

If the part is a CNC machined or laser cut aluminum panel, then 6061 will do nicely. But if there are breaks in the part then 5052 is the answer. From what I’ve read 6061 does not bend well. I admit I’ve only scratched the surface of learning about the different grades of aluminum though.

I understand completely. However there are significant limitations to what I am able to do. For the last 4 years our sales have grown from 35% to 45% each year. Sales increases are generally thought of as good, but it does put a strain on the whole system. Inventory needs to be increased, and sometimes it seems as if all you do is order more parts over and over. So the truth is adding another color to the line would be very expensive. In fact just getting the loose ends anodized in black would be very expensive. So I don’t know what the future will bring. I am definitely interested in completing the Servo Erector Set as far as anodizing goes. I hope to expand the colors as well. I appreciate your comments.

I’m not an expert on this stuff, but I’ve used plenty of 6061 RC parts and bike parts so I can vouch for its all-around excellence.

I know that 7075 is stronger than 6061, but it lacks the corrosion resistance. 2024 is another super strong alloy that is used in modern aircraft, bikes etc.

All of this is kind of academic though… I think 5052 is prefectly fine for robots. Affordability matters.

My neighbor is a PhD mechanical engineer at NASA, so I’ll ask him about this stuff when I get a chance.

Here is an image of the AH3-R with the aluminum chassis installed. It’s shiny 8)

Now think Red or Black!

A set of the fancy legs in alloy, some cool LED Underlighting and it would be great to roam the garden at night scaring the neighbours cats from fouling my garden.

Add your new power arm and it could do the weeding while its there.

Nice move Jim…

Better than that add Italian_guy’s airsoft bb gun, an IR camera, and robo realm software and you could not only chase it down but really motivate it to leave quickly. Might work for the woodchucks (groundhog) and rabbits too. At least you’ll have no more surprises in the flower bed!

Airsoft gun currently underconstruction, lol but we’ll see

I could go for non-anodized aluminum. It’ll make it easier to put a mirror-polish on it! >CH3R Terminator edition<

As I’ve said before, sounds like you could do with a European Support Office, Somewhere in the U.K. Midlands would be good I think. Now I wonder if there are any members around that area :unamused:
