Afinibot A3 Z-axis motors *edited*

I just finished putting together the Afinibot A3 printer and can’t get the Z-axis motors to turn they seem to stutter. the X and Y steppers move and home but the Z steppers do not. I feel I have a dead driver. Any ideas? This unit is brand new, how can I test to see if the driver is gone or if there is a wiring issue?

What kind of board do you have on your A3 ?
Some use connectors and others screw terminal so the second can have issue on the wiring side.

One test you can do is try your two Z axis motor on the X axis driver (remove power when moving the motor connection) to know if you have a motor problem.
Also, disconnect them from the mechanical assembly to run them freely.

Thank you for the response. The board is a Melzi 3.0 v3.0. I have tried the z motors in the x and y locations and they worked fine. Also tried them uncoupled and no go.

When you test the Z axis, do you have both motors connected to the Melzi board ?
The way this motor driver is made, you must have them connected to work as they drive both motors at the same time.

If not it could be either motors which are wired differently (color of the cable doing different things on two motors) or maybe bad motor/melzi.

You can try the X and Y motor on the Melzi at the Z output to confirm that.

Good morning. I have tried one and both motors as well as the x and y motors on that driver. Looking at it last night with a buddy, is it possible that there is a glitch in the firmware where it is not enabling the z axis?

A glitch, this is unlikely but if the limit-switch for Z axis is enabled it might avoid the driver to work.
Check the Z axis switch to be sure.

Checked the switch to ensure proper funxtion and it si working corectly.
