Adding a 4th axis on a shapeoko

Hi!

I am a wood turner, and I want to use a CNC router to add surface decoration to turned objects. Platters and the like would be easy, since they are mostly flat things. They just happen to be round.

It gets much trickier when turning cylindrical objects, like bowls, vases, pen barrels, pepper grinders and whatnot. What I have seen elsewhere is a stepper motor driven chuck, and users connect the y axis wiring to the chuck stepper. Instead of moving the router along the y axis, the chuck turns. Carving is laid out as if the image was split and unwrapped from the object. That way, when the router thinks it is transiting across y, it is actually turning the work under router.

Simple in theory…

Has anyone here attempted this with a Shapeoko?

Thank you so much in advance for your help!

Hey !

It is definitely possible:

You can find a few more informations here too:

Not a specialist but I know it’s possible ! If you ever manage to build this I would like to see you post about it in the blog section of the community  !

Tanks! This is exactly what I was looking for.
