A.T.L.A.S All Terrain Land Assault Sphere (Hexapod)

Jim, will you be adding these 4" femurs to the shop? im looking at getting 6 more and using them for twin Femurs as extra support?

We’ll be adding them soon - they’ve been stacked up in boxes just on the edge of my peripheral vision for a while now, I’ve just been busy with other things. I suppose I ought to have that bit of my “to do” list cut to the front…

Cool… gab a small envelope and slip a few in. i wont tell. lol. thanks beth ill look out for the update.

dude thats looking sharp. Is it functional yet?

Hi Jonny,

Your hex looks awesome and the coxa design really make the body compact. Would be fun to see it in action and doing some body rotations.
Great work!

Sounds great, do they come black anodized too? Would be a great update option for the Phoenix kit.

Thanks for the comments. Well i did have it walking but i have been trying to get things “spot on” with it so back to programming. Since my pc died iv been writing code on my wifes laptop. But once i get mine back ill start uploading the code and test it. The coxa design is very compact with a 110mm span from axis to axis it works well.
Zenta: ill get you those numbers we talked about once i have my system back.

Yes, the 3" and 4" femurs will be available in both black and clear anodized!

ok i have a bit of time to cut and shape three right lune’s.

im not completely happy with them.
Obviously they don’t fit together flush due to the plastic only allowing it to bend in one direction. it would be nice to get an equatical curve too.

although they do seem to allow for movement in the legs.

i havent managed to get a picture of them closed as the legs wont sit in the right position with no power. saying that it does look quite mean, 8)

i might have another re-think over the design. its nice to try different ideas to see whats going to work best. so far this is my third version of the sphere so im kinda getting a better idea of whats needed.

Pssst…

yay. thanks beth.

I got my PC back yesterday. unfortunately it was wiped and all my data is gone. :frowning:
At least i have a very clean fresh start.

Today i manage to program the Hexapod.
The results were great!

I have centered all servo offsets and i have managed to get the hexapod to curl up (sphere mode) when it starts and then have the legs drop out and down to a walking posture. 8)

I’m not having much luck with devices at the moment… My camera has broke too… :open_mouth:
so no videos as of yet.

i still have to finish making the sphere to see if this project will work as hoped. The current Lune segments that i have made are colliding and dont really fit together so more thoughts on that.

I going to have to shop about for a new sphere. I might try looking at a globe like zenta mentioned.
That reminds me… Have you got an update on your sphere project? im sure you have encounter many of the same problems that i have?

I think i have solved one main issue of reducing the segments by reducing the size of the chassis and there for making the overall foot print smaller.
I have also updated the code with the new Tripod gait you showed in your last workshop video. looks great. thanks for sharing that.

Hi Jonny,

Sounds like your having some fun too. Would really love to see a video of it. Currently the progress is very slow, the inner body is finished. I had to remake some parts (shifting from 1,5 to 2mm aluminium). At this moment I’m working with assembling all the legs, slow progress due to lack of available free time. I’ll start mounting the sphere parts to the leg segments at a later point. There are several issues to solve in the code at first. I’m also going for the ARC-32 + SSC-32 combo.

I hope to soon start a thread about the project and hopefully post some pictures, hopefully at the end of this month.

yes. it is a challenge but thats half the fun. good to hear you are making progress.
cant wait to see it.

i might try taking a short video on my phone at some point next week.
im looking forward to the thread.

For those who are interested here is the hexapod powered up. not a great video but that will have to wait.

… and another:

Nice work Jonny!

I like how it curled up in the first video at 00:51.
I’m not sure if you’ve seen the rather old movie “the Thing”? Your hexapod reminded me of the human head that suddenly got six legs spread out.

Great demo, thanks for sharing!

Jonny!

Ditch the sphere and make custom tibias that are arched as they are now, but make them symmetrical so they are as long above the servo axis as they are below it. Then with the right sequence… just roll… Hmmm maybe…

@Kåre:
“the thing” yes i remember that. i know what you mean.

@Jim:
A good idea. i did think about something like that. i was going to add a 4th dof so the legs can also twist on axis. kinda like what Sienna did with the tripod robot a few years back.

then the legs could make a rolling locomotion by twisting the legs in wards and outwards like in-line skates or ski’s.
just a thought.

Maybe if you had access to an English Wheel, you could make up the segments of a sphere out of aluminum. Could probably also be done by hand. You’d make up circle templates, and keep pounding until you got the pieces curved just right.

yes thats one way. would give a nice finish. well i have somebody who is onto the sphere hunt. same guy who got me the misted acrylic one. if they do one (250mm dia) he will order it in for me. i should find out on Saturday.

would be great to get some really strong servos then i think the project could go to the rolling stage. no sure the 645s can support the weight as it rolls. im looking into making some of my own parts and iv been drawing them up over the last few nights. will have to wait and see if i can get them made. or make them by hand.

one other problem im faced with now is i have another project in mind!!! :open_mouth:
i just cant help it.
