4WD1 Tires (PROLINE 1071-00 vs. PROLINE 1060-00)

Hello All,

Yet more robot tire questions. I just bought a set of PROLINE 1060-00 buggy tires and 2.2 rims from the local hobby shop since he had no 1071-00 tires which were the stock tire used in the discontinued 4WD1 rover. These tires are about 1/2" wider than the 1071-00’s. If I used these tires in place of the 1071-00’s would I be ruining the way the kit was designed to perform? The weight difference between the 1071 and 1060 tires I’m sure is nominal. I’m concerned that I may have issues with the 7.2VDC motors not being able to handle the increased tire size. I’m certain that Jim designed the kit with the 1071-00 tires for a good reason. I don’t want to end up with smoked motors because they couldn’t handle the different style/size tire. I apologise if my question seems odd. I’m a novice at best with this stuff, and far from a design/engineering professional. Any replies are greatly appreciated. Thank you all, this is a wonderful forum.

1/2 inch wider or 1/2 inch larger diameter? the wider may cause a mechanical interference with the chassis and if it does not then the thing will just turn a little harder due to the increased contact area with the floor. the larger diameter will make it go a little faster, maybe have a little less pulling torque, but really unlikely you are going to damage the motors.

Hi EddieB,

Thanks for the reply, it’s really appreciated. I should have clarified that the tires are 1/2" wider than the 1071-00 PROLINE. It’s amazing at just how hard of a time I’m having with tires. I should be more worried about the programming aspects rather than a stupid tire issue :unamused:

I think wider will come down to an issue of whether the hubs will still properly reach the rim without mashing the tire up against the rover.

If the only difference is .5 wider not a problem. If anythig it will give more traction.

Hello All,

I’m at a critical decision making stage at the moment. Do I just toss out the discontinued 4WD1 kits and order the new replacement kits? Or do I keep trying to make the kits I have work. The new kits feature the 12mm hub, which would make my tire issues disappear. I need proper tires for my project that are ‘true’. I am using encoder modules (US Digital) on each of the motors. My past work has shown that tires that are not ‘true’ will yield terrible results. I am sooooo confused  .

Dobermann,

You may have a problem using wheel encoders with a rover that uses skid steering to maneuver.

There may be slippage when making turns that may make encoder distance traveled inaccurate.

Just a thought.

Hi TCIII,

Thanks for the comment. This 4WD1 rover was going to be using two Acroname Moto 1.0 controllers using LV H-Bridge modules (x4). Overkill, perhaps. I agree about the skid steering/encoder problem and am well aware of that from previous projects (let me rephrase that - MISTAKES  ). I am just trying to see if encoder data from the four motors -vs- just the two would give me more precise control. Any ideas?

I’m surprised to see this. Did you not read in your last thread that I offered to send you some new tires? I am curious as to why you don’t just try something. There is good reason to analyze the properties of a drive train prior to making large purchases. But in this case you have the equipment right there in front of you. So it’s beyond me why you don’t just try it to see if it will perform to your needs. If you find it will not, then you’re not out anything as you will still be able to use all of the electronics for the newer chassis you are considering for your project. I don’t mean to sound like I’m picking on you, but the truth is there is no useful info from the manufacturer for this kind of equipment. There are no specs, or quantitative values for load bearing, compression, wear and tear, etc. This is very much a try it and see situation.

Hi Jim,

I apologise for my frustration with this project. I was hoping for things to to go much easier than it currently is. I will take you up on your offer for the tires and rims. I found the 1060-00 PROLINES are too wide to be of value with the 4WD1 kits. My address should be in the Lynxmotion sales database, but if not how do I go about sending my address to you? Again, I appreciate everyones assistance, you have been most valuable. Lynxmotion products are the finest around. I am a true believer! Thanks again, everyone.

Well the forum is anonomous and some people would get more than a little upset if I were to search the sales database looking for a forum member. It’s a big no no, and I don’t do it. Below each message is a button called PM. It’s a personal message much like email. Use that to send me your address…
