4WD sumo control using Pololu Dual VNH5019 Motor Driver Shield for Arduino

Hello LMRians,

So i thought for sometime on this sumo-thingy, for a sumo robot competition. I decided on using these motors, they are nearly 9.5cm in length, however using a 2WD version would make my bot 19cm wide, but the max dimensions are 17x17x17 cm3. So i thought about mounting the motors in an unparalled configuration i.e. one at the back and one at the front, allowing me to mount my motors well within to fit the bot dimensions. But a 2WD would give an unstable bot.

So, i am thinking again, to make a 4WD version, in a similar manner by placing the motors one after the other in a line, so that it might result in a stable configuration.

My sincere apologies for this dumb illustration :D

So, you might be wondering why i didn't choose some other motor, shorter in length, why this longer one?  but these motors look strong, have good torque+RPM combination, and above all, fit my budget :D

Now after this story of about how i am ending up bulding a 4wd sumo, time to know how to control it, with a single motor driver, and i have a big buddy in the Pololu Dual VNH5019 Motor Driver Shield for Arduino.

So these motors are rated at 7.5 Amps stall, and this driver boasts a continuous 12Amps current for dual motors. I am wondering if i can use two motors each connected in parallel  as shown here  (except that's a 6WD, not a 4WD) and controlled by  this pololu motor driver. So, if i am not wrong, the voltage for powering these motors would be the same, and the stall current values would change? this driver can handle 30AMPS max per motor, so where am i heading guys? pretty safe? what do you suggest? do you have any calulations? thanks :D

Maybe a set of bevel gears

Maybe a set of bevel gears can help you out. Then you can go with your 2WD design and mount the motors at 90 degrees to the wheels and have them side-by-side in the chassis. I’m thinking hacking in something similar to this, although I’m not completely sure of the size of this particular setup.

Found the video.

Here is the clip of the bot with offset motors.

cool, did i just say a 2WD

cool, did i just say a 2WD like that would be unstable?? thanks JerZ

Hello everyone, thanks to

Hello everyone, thanks to Mr. Pythogoras, i have a new design for my bot using the same motors.
