Choose a regular diode (not a zener or an LED!) with a current rating well above the max expected current through the relay coil.
Oh, and a MOSFET would be fine. I tend to have BJTs on hand, so I usually use them.

Just when I thought I had
Just when I thought I had all my needed parts, I noticed the rectangle shape icon in the suggested circuit diagram on page 24 of the PicAxe manual you suggested. It is labeled “10K”. Could you help me out? What is that and what is it’s role in all this? Thanks!
That would be a 10k ohm
That would be a 10k ohm resistor.
The resistor pulls the gate of the MOSFET down to ground, but when the output of the PICAXE is high it limits the current flow to a reasonable amount.
5V out of PICAXE / 10,000 ohms = 0.5 mA of current.
V2 not powering A & B motor outputs
Using an L293d in the onboard slot- when I connect a second power supply, it still only provides V1 power to the A and B motor outputs. Provides appropriate V2 to everything else…
Am I missing something, but isn’t the onboard slot for the L293 supposed to ouput V2 to the A&B motor connections?
Adding motor driver
Hai,
Please help me
Adding motor driver
Hai,
My Friend has a picaxe 28 pin board it hasn’t a motor driver slot, only 2 IC holder Ist for Micro controler and 2nd for
ULN2803A IC,how can I add a motor driver L293 D with this board.
That’s another board - and
That’s another board - and you should ask the manufacturor (Picaxe). I’m pretty sure their website will have the information you seek.

where is the program???
heyy…bro…please say, where is the program of the robot?
