Me and my son are planning a project and are in need of a set of tracks. I really like the Lynxmotion 2" tracks. My question is can they be shortened. If so how much before they start to not function properly? We plan on a 3 wheel setup.
you actually build the tracks up from individual segments that are about 1.1" from pivot to pivot so the length is very easy to adjust.
there are two different sized sprockets, 6 and 9 segment. as you might guess, if you wrap the track around a 6 segemtn sprocket it will take 6 track sections. so if you think about this you need enough track to warp half way around each of two sprockets and then enough between the sprockets so they don’t crash into each other.
Using the 6-segment sprockets I would guess at the minimum track length to be roughly 12 segments… which is 3 around the end of each sprocket and 3 each on top and bottom… which would put your axles roughly 3.3" apart.
using the 9-segment sprockets isn’t quite as easy because it is an odd number. there are 4-1/2 segments on each half and I don’t think I would go less than 5 segments each top and bottom for a total of 19. it might work with 18… without breaking out the cad program I would tend to round up though.
I’m not sure I understand 3-wheel setup using tracks… would you elaborate a bit on what you have in mind?
