Researchers from the Vere project are using an fMRI machine to "read" thoughts from a human user and use those signals to control the motion of a small humanoid robot as demonstrated in the video below. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXFmRzNZHqc This project is very interesting because the use of an fMRI machine (which monitors mental activity by reading the blood flow inside the brain) is more advanced than taking usual brain waves readings because it allows researchers to more accurately picture the subjects' thoughts rather than recognizing pre-programmed pattern. Unfortunately this method requires a very expensive device that is only accessible to a few research institutes. Although this technology is still very experimental, it shows lots of promise, especially since it could allow disabled people to control and manipulate objects in their environment using robotic devices.
