USB to Serial problem with a twist

Hi guys,

Sorry to create another thread on this topic, but I have been through all the others and cant find a situation like mine. So here it is.

After the first USB to Serial converter I purchased didn’t work I went out and got the Belkin F5U109. Once I installed the drivers it worked perfectly and I didn’t even need to change any settings. It actually programmed as fast as my PC using the real serial port.
So the problem came when I turned on my Laptop one day and it had decided to stop working. As far as I know I hadn’t changed a thing from the day before when it was working fine. What’s up with that?!?!
So I had given up on the adapter till I tried to use it one day and it actually worked! But it is painfully slow.

So the trick is that if I use the adapter with a non-powered USB hub it works(slowly) but plugged straight into the Laptop’s USB port I get nothing.

Any ideas on what is happening?

I should also mention that I have tried many of the things mentioned in the other threads and nothing works for me.

Specifically, did you check that the rx and tx buffers are the same, not off by one?

Have you tried un-installing the driver and re-installing it as a plug and play device?

I have tried all combination’s of suggestions in the other topics ie: tx rx buffers the same at 1/2/4/8/14, changing the baud rate, changing the reset hold time and a few others I can’t remember the name of. No success

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing but not success. I haven’t tried it as a plug and play device. Is that a setting somewhere?

Since we are starting over on this you may want to list all of the information you can. PC make and model, operating system, etc.

Have you tried another PC? It would be a good idea to make sure the stuff works on another PC just as a reality check. Then at least you know its a problem with the PC and not the atom.

Yeah I tried everything. I even tried to copy the values used by my PC’s serial port! No luck their either.

In the end I went the ‘cheaper’ solution to the problem and bought a PC with a dedicated serial port for 20AUD from a company that was getting rid of their old PC’s. Its not the best PC in the world, but it more than meets the requirements of the BasicATOM-Pro IDE.

thanks for the input guys

There’s nothing wrong with having a clunker PC to do robotics with. I’m sorry you were unable to resolve the USB to serial cable issues. You never mentioned trying a different USB to serial cable. It sounds like it just died on you. :frowning: I’m glad you’re up and running anyway. 8)
