Sunny - The InMoov clone at DFRobot

UPDATE OCTOBER 24, 2014:

The time lapse video made with 1200 photos captured by Sunny's camera eye (it's on Youku).

May I introduce Sunny. He's a direct offspring of the famous InMoov.

We started building Sunny (well, I am actually not doing much work but giving a helping hand and advises) her ein DFRobot for display at the Shanghai Maker Carnival in mid October.

Right now the head is almost done and we are planning to move down step by step.

The head contains a camera and a speaker to stream video from his left eye and talking via a Python script Espeak running on a Cubieboard.

Well, since the embed video is not working, here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8urc4VHMVMk

And here some pictures:

Sunny's head without the jaw.

Stuffed with bubble wrap for the pait job.

As we use all the 3D printers available we will not be able to print all parts in one color, so the jaw was done in blue. The paint job will cover that anyway.

Inside the head you can see the gear on the neck and holders for neck, jaw and eye servos.

Already some servos installed.

Sunny's left eye will have a camera for a later face recognition. The other eye will perhaps get a red or RGB LED.

Very rough paint job with silver spray paint. Not sure if we will get over it again with filler primer and new finish.

And that's how Sunny is seeing the world...or just me :-)

UPDATE October 21:

Last weekend we had Sunny displayed at the Maker Carnival in Shanghai. People were quite interested and did all funny things to draw his attention. As we had a siple speak engine running, he said something when the distance sensor got triggered, basically everytime somebody passed by.

Close up of th Sunny head. The InMoov offspring looks a bit ugly but people liked it, except small children, they were quite scared.

Tak a light stand, a clothe hanger, a bunch of cable ties and an InMoov head called Sunny and you get something :-)

Jose (let me call him Sunny's father) explaining some details...

Well, there is still a folder with 1000 pictures from Sunny's eye cam we need to bring into a video.

I like it!
That’s a nice head.

Will you be doing more of the body?

I’m planning on doing a much more “cartoony” head for Groucho, but definitely not a humanoid body.

Great build

I like the inmoov robots,  planning to build one maybe in a month, I’ve just ordered my 3d printer but in the US for $300, since in my country (Mexico) the cheapest (prusa) is $1000 and $1200(prusa i3).

I see you are using the cubieboard, could you tell me which version is? and which linux distribution are you using on it?, I have the first version with the A10 processor that bought maybe a year ago but haven’t use it too much, just android image for media playing, once I tried the berryboot with raspian but I didn’t like the performance, feel to slow the system.

Cool, another one in the

Cool, another one in the nation!

Well, sorry for the late

Well, sorry for the late answer, I did not get any notification about comments :frowning:

@DT: Yes, we are working us down the body. The next thing is the shoulder, arms, body legs, feet. We are planning to finish Sunny as a fully functional humanoid.

@HaZZa: We are using the Cubieboard 2 as it’s more powerful than the first version and the OS running is the newest Cubian from the Cubie website.

@gael: It’s an honor to meet you here  Well, we are working on it in some spare time and also to prepare it for the Shanghai Maker Faire. The plan for that event is to have aworking head with speech recognition and voice output. Maybe we still have time to finish the face tracking. All in all it’s a very intersting project, especially the price tag. We thought to build a Poppy first but that extremly expensive servos killed our mood.
