Stepper motor as encoder

Pretty simple circuit I found, you may have to play with the resistor values to get the output to logic level depending on your steppper.

It uses two voltage comparators to convert the output to a square wave form to be read by micros, it will output the rate and direction of rotation based on the sequence it spits out high values.
