A while back, I expressed my slight dissatisfaction with the Mini-ITX board I purchased for this project (the VIA EPIA M10000) because I cannot run the GBA emulator - it’s only a 1GHz board, after all. Since a “robot dude” I know (not mentioning any forum names ) has offered to purchase the M10000 board from me to use on a rover, I took a look at the LogicSupply website that Sam posted in another thread.
Anyone have any info on this board? I’d appreciate a second opinion from someone who knows a bit more about this sort of thing than I before buying it.
The webpage does say that this board does have “considerable cooling requirements”, so I can probably assume I’ll need to cut some ventilation holes, and add some more fans, correct?
Also, I’ve finally done a bit of work on my website, and now that I have Gallery, I’m uploading pictures of my projects so they’re finally all in one place.
Well, long story short, I’m putting a computer inside a gutted SNES, hooking up SNES controllers, and installing a SNES emulator so that I can play SNES games on the PC - which will look like a real SNES. Check the rest of the thread for more images and whatnot. I even modified an original SNES mouse into USB optical. 8)
During the “console wars” in the 1990s, a friend of mine was home over the semester break, when they had some relatives over. His nephew saw the old Atari 2600 under the TV. His eyes got really huge and, thinking he was seeing some exotic new console that he’d never heard of, asked “Oh, wow! Is that new?!”
Ah, nostalgia. Now I just need to figure out if this new board’ll work for me.
@Seamus: Hah, nice. I’ve literally grown up with the Final Fantasy series - we were born in the same year. So when I realized that they’re working on Final Fantasy XIII… That was a big “holy crap” moment for me.
@A-Bot: A lot of my carts are getting too worn down to play correctly any more - you practically pass out doing the “blow-in-the-cartridge” trick and they still don’t work unless you push 'em in just right. That’s why I’m tending toward a computer to play ROMs. But yes, I agree. There’s a lot of underappreciated quality in these old games. Kids nowadays - it’s all about graphics. Game developers now don’t know anything about telling a good story.
It is really too bad you missed out on the Auto Assault MORPG. The story line is told from and through the perspective of each of the three factions… and it is interesting enough you find yourself doing the quests as much to get to read the next set of dialogue as to get the exp for doing them. Unforunately they are shutting off the switch Aug 31… possibly due to a lack of subscribers capable of actual reading and comprehension skills.
Right now the project’s in bits and pieces. My 30 days of WinXP I was using for testing has run out (I just installed a copy I already had lying around for the sake of making sure it would all work), so I had to buy a copy for the SNESpc.
In order to be able to play GBA games (that tiny GBA screen! I can’t see it!) on the SNESpc, I think I’m going to buy this 2GHz board, the Phylon 7F2WE-2G. The 1GHz board I have currently only runs GBA games at about 50-70% normal speed, which is unplayable. Once that board arrives, I’ll be able to finish the project up.
