SmartDriveDuo Smart Dual Channel 30A Motor Driver by Cytron

Hi,

Does SmartDriveDuo Smart Dual Channel 30A Motor Driver

by Cytron"…, can do the tank function mode like the “Sabertooth Dual 2x32A 6V-24V Regenerative Motor Driver”?
Which are better and Why the sabertooth more expentive?

Thank
Nick

Hello @Nick72 and welcome to the RobotShop community,

The Sabertooth 2x32 will drive two motors at up to 32A continuous and 64A peak each. These can be mixed together for a tank drive type vehicle, or run independently. It can be controlled by analog voltages, R/C transmitters, TTL serial commands, USB, or a combination of these signals.

Features:

  • Synchronous regenerative drive
  • Ultrasonic 30 kHz switching frequency
  • Thermal and overcurrent protection
  • Battery protection mode
  • USB control and monitoring
  • USB serial converter mode for Kangaroo x2
  • Configurable current limiting
  • Custom user modes
  • 12-bit motor outputs
  • Input modes: analog, R/C, serial (plain text or packetized), USB
  • Power outputs can act as voltage clamps, brakes, or be controllable

The SmartDriveDuo Smart Dual Channel 30A Motor Driver is designed to drive two medium power brushed DC motors with current capacity up to 80A peak (few seconds) and 30A continuously. This driver is designed especially for controlling differential drive (tank style) mobile robots using an RC controller. Nevertheless, the MDDS30 also can be controlled using analog joystick or microcontroller (PWM, Serial).

Features:

  • Bi-directional control for dual brushed DC motor.
  • Support motor voltage from 7V to 35V.
  • Maximum current up to 80A peak (1 second), 30A continuously, each channel.
  • On board MOSFETs are switched at 18 KHz for quiet operation.
  • Battery low voltage indicator.
  • Battery over-voltage indicator.
  • Thermal protection.
  • Current limit protection.
  • Multiple input modes: RC, Analog/PWM, Serial Simplified and Serial Packetized.

These mean that both can be used for controlling a tank-style robot, however, the Sabertooth offers many more features hence the price.
