ServoCity 12V 105RPM 53:1 720oz-in Spur Gear Motor w/ Encoder

Hi
Please can you advise if the ServoCity 12V 105RPM 53:1 720oz-in Spur Gear Motor w/ Encoder comes with a quadrature connector lead, and if not which one I should buy? Do you sell them? I want to connect them to a RoboClaw 2x15A, 6-34VDC Regenerative Motor Controller.

Additionally the spec for the motor says:

  • Encoder Type: Relative, Quadrature
  • Sensor Type Magnetic (Hall Effect)

Does this mean the motor I will receive will have two sensors, both quadrature and hall? I need accurate odometry, both direction and distance, for a SLAM / mapping application in ROS. What is the purpose of each sensor please?

Many thanks

From what I see in the specifications of the product is that the encoder type is : Relative, Quadrature.
You may find more information here concerning ‘Encoder type’: https://www.dynapar.com/technology/encoder_basics/quadrature_encoder/

The Sensor type for the encoder is Magnetic (Hall Effect), you may find how it works here: https://www.dynapar.com/technology/encoder_basics/hall_effect_encoders/

So this is not 2 type of encoder on the motor you are looking, it’s simply the type of encoder and the type of sensor inside the encoder.

You may find additional information concerning the motor driver here: http://downloads.ionmc.com/docs/roboclaw_datasheet_2x15A.pdf#page=5
Note that you may connect your motor’s encoder directly on the driver.
It is possible to drive 2 motor with this driver which mean you can also plug 2 encoders.

I hope this helped you.

Thank you, that makes sense with the sensor type.

Please can you advise if you sell the connector lead? I am unable to find it on the robotshop site. Alternatively if you can provide the spec I can find it from elsewhere.

Many thanks

The type of connector is the following: 4-Pos JST XH
Unfortunately, RobotShop is not selling it.

If you want to learn more about JST connectors: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JST_connector

Have a look at: Product Code : RB-Dfr-404.
