Rust Prevention

Well, here it is, a thread on the best way to rust prof steel.

Disscuss away!

I think the best way to prevent CRS from rusting is to powdercoat it. That’s the extent of my knowledge on the subject. lol

Good old spray paint works very well as long as the part is clean.

If the part is already rusted you can remove the rust with this stuff that has worked great for me called evapo-rust. You can get it at autozone. The only thing wrong with it in my experience is it doesn’t work anywhere near as fast as it says it does on the bottle but it does work. Just where are you taking this robot where you have to worry about rust anyway?

LPS #3 rust inhibitor, is a spray lubricant that protects metal surfaces up to 2 years. It leaves a soft waxy film on metal parts and is used for storage of metal components or components subjected to high humidity.

LPS spray lubricants are my favorite and I have used them At Compaq and another print shop before and love the stuff. I love it so much I would love to swim in it. :open_mouth:

Yes, normal spray paints works fine as i’ve found

to remove rust from orioginal sheets of metal, i used a palm sander with some fin grit sand paper.

slahmaster, i thik this might stem off my thread about my rover, its made of sheet steel and i was worried about rust to get rid of it, i also still worry about rust because it an explorative rover that will encounter water/mud/possibly snow and i need it to not rust. thats just my reason for the no rust thing

Oh, well how big is it? If not too big you can dip the body in evaporust if it starts to rust.

its 15" long by about 13" wide and at 15 lbs, its a decently big bot, dont think ill be dipping it in anything

Yeah that is pretty big for a robot made with lynxmotion. Do the servo’s have enough power for it? Got any pics? What do you do with it?

You might want to look into marine epoxy types of paint.
