Consider a 5:1 w/540 motor: robotshop.com/banebots-5-1-p60-gearbox-rs540-brushed-motor-kit.html
The price for a motor + gearbox increases because although the motors are mass produced, often in the hundreds of thousands or even millions, these gear boxes are produced in the thousands.

The gear boxes are always far more expensive than the DC motor, usually by a ratio of 10:1. The gear box can be purchased separately, but would be the combination minus the cost of the motor (essentially the same). You might try a smaller spur gear motor. robotshop.com/en/spur-gearmotors.html

Instead of using one 30oz-in motor, you can use two 15oz-in, or four 7.5oz-in…

The higher the capacity the longer the robot will last, but it also usually means the battery is heavier. LiPo are lighter than NiMh but also more expensive, and the voltages are different. There are not many onboard charging systems and you’ll likely need to remove the battery and connect it to a separate charger. We could say that a 10,000mAh battery would help your robot last a really long time, but the robot would probably be too weighed down to move. Similarly a 2800mAh battery would last ~1/4 the time, but weigh a lot less.

Hi,

I think in a lot of cases, you would want to have two drive motors, each of which is connected to a H-Bridge. Alternately you can use a single motor shield, like this one: robotshop.com/dfrobot-arduino-compatiable-motor-shield-1.html, to drive both, if you are controlling things with an Arduino. You can then use a caster as the third point of contact. If you want to see a small robot that is created with components you can buy at RobotShop - with links to the pages at RobotShop in the instructions PDF - please see: eyesbot.com/blog/?preload=robotshop_robot.txt It uses an iPod to drive the Arduino (a Leonardo) but you can swap that out with anything that can send signals to the Leonardo.

Hi

Thanks for your response. Can you please recommend some good omni wheels that provide good traction on tiled surfaces as well as on carpet and that aren’t too expensive?

Thanks, Rohan
