Robot arm material

Hello There!!

I am a Machine Designer. First time we are going to try a small robot design. Which has 9 DOF the arm lenth is 500 mm. I am looking for a strong material in less weight. Do you guys have any idea for that?

Thanks,

John

Here are a few things.

Although carbon fiber is difficult to come by I think they make drone frames for it on hobby king and you might be able to get it cheap there I think. If not you might be able to try else where. Also if you are looking to make a robot arm out of steel and make it lighter weight try to come up with a more efficient design. You can do this by drawing a solution that is hollow with steel in it for structual support in it. Same thing works with other materials. I wish you good luck!!! by the way carbon fiber is very light weight and is strongerr than steel lol.

Exactly

Strong + lightweight = carbon fber. Ex: https://www.robotshop.com/en/modular-4-dof-robot-arm-position-control-carbon-fiber.html

Second best after that might be G10 (still a composite).

A suggestion

Why not use aluminum angle?

It’s light, inexpensive and usually readily available.  I’m suggesting the angle stock, because it won’t bend or flex, but is light and easily cut, milled and such.
