I am working on my robot looking into low-cost navigation options and I came across optical flow sensors. Could an optical flow sensor be used on a ground robot to determine path and location? Has anyone tried this?

This is the first time I hear about these sensors, so I haven’t used these for sure, but now I am interested what these are
I did a quick research, and it seems that there are several papers on this topic available (although, you need to pay to read these):
