MDi #3

Wow I can’t beleive I have never seen this robot on here before.

Dear: Dickel

Interesting robot. I really like your construction for the robot though. I am just curious how did you design the robot. Anyways well done!!!

Hello, Noah! Thank you very much for your comment!

To design my projects I just do sketches by hand, because usually the project is already fully designed in my mind.     Then I do 2D templates to have precision in the manufacture of the parts. Rarely I make plans in 3D (with SketchUp).

I love the paint job!

good job

seems cool…your project will give me some ideas…well done Dickel

Hi again, Noah!Just one more

Hi again, Noah!

Just one more thing I consider important about the process of conception of my projects that I forgot to mention before: many times I make cardboard prototypes for my projects. It gives me a real perspective of how it will look in the end, avoiding the frustration of doing all the work to produce the parts and only at the end realize that some plans were not good.

This is a cardboard prototype of a robot I’m planning to build.

I am sorry and cool!!!

Dear: Dickel

I am so sorry I forgot I replied to this post. I wasn’t on LMR for a while and it just slipped my mind I replied to this. I wish I was as much of an artist as you were. I can’t see how you could do that. Very cool!!!

Well that’s even more impressive!!!

Dear: Dickel

That’s very impressive!!! How do you precision in the manufacture of parts? I can’t beleive you do it by hand that makes it even more impressive!!! Well good luck and if you need any expereince with cad let me know. I am a cad expert.

Programming

What kind of programming language did you use for the Robot, and what software of programming did you use? Im planning on building a robot for my senior project and I’m new at this. Please respond back.

Thank you,

Hello, VERTEX!

I use the Arduino programming language and the Arduino IDE. It’s quite simple. And as I’m not a programming Jedi it’s the ideal for me.

Robot

Hi Mr. Dickel, thank you for responding back. I wanted to ask you for permission if I will be able to reproduce this project for my Senior Project in high school. I also wanted to ask if you can help me on building the robot like if you can be my mentor.

Thank you so much,

VERTEX

DC 5V motor with gearbox

I almost forgot, to ask where did you get the DC 5V motor with gearbox at, because I can’t find one.

Thank you,

VERTEX

Hello, VERTEX!Yes, you can

Hello, VERTEX!

Yes, you can reproduce MDi #3, quoting the source. You can see in the post a link to a Google Drive folder with the 2D templates.

It’s been a long time since I bought these 5V DC motors with gearbox, and I no longer have the link, but it was from eBay. BTW, was bad motors.

Impressive!

What a project! Really nice!
I was supprised that your arm servos handle the weight of the arm so well. It seems like their torque is at best 5.5 kg*cm. Your arm (ehem, sorry, I mean your robots arm!) must be really lightweight. But then again. It seems like the robot is even able to hold a thick book! (first pic). How is that possible?

Thank you Mr. Dickel

Thank you Mr. Dickel

Hi, Nekojiru! Thank you

Hi, Nekojiru! Thank you very much for your comment!

Yep, the arms are lightweight. To explain how the arm can hold that book, let’s first specify some things:

The weight of the book is about 270g (i.e. 0.27kg).

The book was positioned approximately 12 cm from the servo motor shaft.

The servo motors which make the most of the work are the “elbows” (at right is a HS-82MG, 3.4 kg-cm and at left is HS-81, 3.0 kg-cm). So you can see that the torque is less than what you said!

But with some calculations we will see how it is possible for the arm holding the book.

3.4/12 = 0.283 and 3.0/12 = 0.25 (these are the torques of the servo motors to 12 cm away from the shaft)

Considering that the two servo motors work together is even easier.

Torque

Hello Dickel,

Thanks for the detailed reply! Now I see how it’s possible. I did some calculations before asking you about the torque. But for some reason I thought that that book is A4 and must at least weight 1 kg. And I totally forgot that there are 2 arms… ! hehe^^
