I started with a blinking LED…
Standard advice: Start with a blinking LED, go from there. This is where I started and here I am a year later starting to learn how to get my robot to talk to my laptop! Start simple -you can do it!
I would suggest Picaxe (as used in the start here bot). The code looks a lot like regular english, there is a lot of simple instructions and help in the manuals and a lot of people here can help you with it. --Not too expencive either.

Feel free to jump in and start with the basics. Read the manuals and jump in. When you get stuck ask questions. I usually check the site a dozen or so times a day so if I know the answer I try to help as quickly as possible.
