Innerbreed's Animatronic Hawk Project + Owl

I have now added the other wing. also i have redesigned the body.
iv tilted the wings so the wing tips point down in a better position.
Also i have lengthened the neck.

This new design will/ should give the movements im hoping to achieve and will also make the body making process easier.

I have also had a chance to play with the code.
Everything is working correctly. I was trying to get sharp and jerky movements for the head, and with a combination of axis for the head it can give a very realistic motion.
But regarding the wings im looking to get a smoother movement.
At the moment i have just done a movement test to see if the code works.
They are working on a 'what i call “point to point” basis. This works great for the head!
But i have plenty of work to do to smooth out those wings. might use a select mode and use the J/Sticks for this. we will see.

Also when the v1.0 code is finished i post the code here, but also now im looking at making a V1.1 code that will be converted from the phoenixV1.3 code.

Nice! 8)

I have managed to find some great references that i can use to get the dimensions correct when making the sculpture.

Just to show a few:

At the moment the hawk mech fits to these dimensions.

Here is the process i will be taking to complete this project:
Body creation process: phase one (fabrication of the body)
1) Sculpt the Hawk using clay, taking reference from drawings.
2) Take a cast of the sculpt using plaster of paris. two part mold.
3) Make an EasyFlo 120 Polyurethane Liquid Plastic core from cast. (roto)
4) Open and remove - Core complete

Body creation process: phase two (fabrication for the skin)
5) OverSculpt the original sculpt allowing for wings etc.
6) Take a cast of the new sculpt using plaster of paris. two part mold.
7) Make an Liquid Latex core from cast. (roto)
8) Open and remove - Core complete

Body creation process: phase three (build)
9) Fit the mech inside Polyurethane core
10) Fit Latex skin core over model
11) Fabrication for the feather suit, art finishing, painting and touch up

Im also looking into housing the electronics inside an artificial tree stump or log that the hawk will be standing on. 8)

well i have started the head sculpt.

i remember doing a bit of clay pottery in school but this has touch a new level for me.
here is my first sculpt:

I still have lots of work to do on this as i can see a few thing id like to improve on before i make the cast.
kinda look evil. not the look i was after.

For the evil part, its all in the eyebrows

Yes your right. I will have to do something with them. Also since the photo i have shortened the whole head by making the beak and jaw smaller and also the back of the head is more rounded. I need to widen the distance between the eyes as it doesnt look right from the front. Ill work on that later today. I should also be sculpting the body soon. I plan to cast them separatly as it will save a load of cutting up and dividing later. Post more pics later.

made a few improvements to the sculpt: (Hi-Res)

You should have been an artist!

Alan KM6VV

thanks alan, well actually i did study Art & Design at collage… but now im a builder. :unamused:

One thing is for sure you’ve proven that you are an artist! I’m very impressed with all your skills!
Awesome Jonny!

iv ordered some RTV Silicone Mould Making Rubber. i think it will make the process easier.

Anyway here are some hi-res images of the sculpt 'with my new camera… yay.

For the texture on the beak i use a small round file by rolling it over the beak to create it. works quite will. in fact the only tool i used was the file. :open_mouth:

OK, wayy too close!

Nice job!

Alan KM6VV

Great drawings!

Alan KM6VV

thanks alan and Kåre, thats most of my child hood coming out there.

Jonny,

Why not work towards Fox the Phoenix of the “Harry Potter” films?

Now that’s animatronics! (Just saw a piece on “Creating the world of Harry Potter”).

Alan KM6VV

Now that would be the only one project my wife would have an interest in. she loves the harry potter films.

Well we will have to see where this project takes me. i have started casting the body sculpture but im trying different techniques before i post any work. plus im waiting for some more materials to arrive. so far iv ordered samples to see what will work best, and with what process.
Its quite an exciting project having different aspects and areas to work in, but it is becoming stressful having to do all the work of several departments on my own. When the project gets to the point of “finishing and touching up” (art department) im thinking of asking my wife to glue all the feathers on. :smiling_imp:

I have already got 80 pheasant feathers ready to be examined and modified before they can be brought to the project.
For the size and type of bird im making i would need about 7000 feathers. i wont be using anywhere near that amount but i will be looking at about 300/350 for this project.

The reason i have chosen pheasant feathers is they are as close to the coloration and size i need. plus the cost, and the fact i’d need a license for hawk feathers of that quantity.

How about turkey feathers? Can you dye them? Remember, the Phoenix was red!

Alan KM6VV

Yes but i wont be needing red feathers for a hawk. it would be cheaper as red feathers are widely available on eBay for crafts but im not making the phoenix. …yet.

turkey feathers are pretty close too.
