HS485-HB tight fit in SES brackets

First off I have built assemblies with the 485 and although it is a tight fit, they can be used. The ASB-04 brackets were designed with enlarged holes and enough mechanical “slop” to fit most servos. You must appreciate how difficult it is to make a bracket that fits every servo perfectly.

I have received some parts for testing. The button head screw works, but we would have to include a metric hex tool to match it. Because the 8mm long screws do not thread completely into the standard 3mm nut I have found the easiest fix is to use a half height nut. The half height 3mm nut will be included for every kit that uses the 485. Now that we have a solution I must order in bulk and the kits will be updated ASAP. In time all the parts bags for the bearing attachment will include these half height nuts by default. For now kits will have parts added to the kits.

If you provide me with your address we will send you the half height nuts when I receive them in bulk. I’m sorry for not getting this fixed faster. We’re doing the best we can here.

My question is if only the half nut is used, wont the screw length still cause the problem? Did you use a shorter screw? or did you use a washer to keep the screw from going past the half nut thickness?

The original 8mm screw only went about half way into the full size nut. So the half height nut is the easiest way to go.

The standard nut is 2.53mm thick.

The new nut is 1.67mm thick.

The space savings is 0.86mm. With the new nuts there is still a minor gap, but it’s easily closed with normal mounting hardware. So as long as Hitec doesn’t make any servos taller than this one, we should be OK!

I’m sorry this problem happened, and also sorry it took a little over a week for me to solve it. We are already in the process of updating all affected kits documentation.

Sorry if this is a sore spot, but I am still confused. I just put in an order for a set of 485s but I have a bunch of old SES. Will all the hardware I need to make the 485s work with my SES be included with my servo purchase? Thanks.

I just read through this and was thinking the same thing you were, however once I looked at the date of the last post (11/09/2009), I think it’s safe to assume that this was resolved a while ago.

This could also be a problem in the servo hinge. Possibly the same thin nut could work here? I really don’t like loosing the threads. a thin shim piece on top of the universal brackets might be preferable.

The servo hinge does not use the ASB-04 bracket so it will not be affected by this.

Because the original configuration didn’t use all the threads in the nut, you aren’t losing anything. Using the thinner nuts only worked because the original nut was thicker than it needed to be.

We fixed the problem by including a half height nut in the 485 servos we sell for use in our kits. Eventually we will convert all of the nuts used in the brackets to this half height design, but it will take a long time. We get parts bags 10k units at a time. So if you buy a kit from us that uses the 485, you will get the nut with the servo. If you buy a bunch of 485 servos from ebay, you will need to try and find the half height 3mm nuts in order to use them.

I was wondering, does the HS-5755MG fit into your quarter scale brackets? Have you tried those?

The servos fit the ASB-201 brackets, but we don’t have “C” brackets that fit the servo horn. We may make a special bracket for it. Not sure yet.

Thanks. I have had great success with the HS-755MG in your brackets, they seem strong and durable. The narrow part of the bracket that folds over the servo screws have bent in some cases, but probably due to forces greater than from the HS-755MG that they are designed for-- a Robotzone servo pushes down on it at a funny angle. Your quarter scale brackets might have some weakness with a stronger servo. But they are great and I am sure they work great whenever they are used the way they were designed to be used.

Regarding this, I’ve just got my first Lynxmotion parts arrive today for a new project i’m working on.

I was intending on ordering hs485hb’s to fit in these, but measuring the gap (from servo horn tip to foam pad in hinge) only 4.3cm is available. Looking at the dimensions of the 485 on hitec’s website the size (from servo horn tip to servo base) is 4.5cm.

Anybody got any suggestions of how to get the extra mm back? Or have people tried these servos in this setup (like on the Scout) and found there to be no problem?

Don’t forget the thickness of the attachment foam pad.

I’m wondering if the servo horn could be milled down?

I ended up ordering a bunch of thin hex nuts from mcmaster.com , and there’s still some space left and nothing binds up, the part number you need for it at Mcmaster is 90695A033.

Are you meaning that you replaced the nut inside the servo hinge, or are you referring to the origional problem with the multi-purpose bracket?

Those are the same nuts we include with the 485 servos. The idea is to use them inside the ASB-04 and has nothing to do with the problem at hand. These servo hinges will not work with the 485 servos. We are adding this information to the website. If you can locate some double sided tape that is much thinner it should work though.

I recently started building the phoenix and have the same issue.

Assuming the nuts that just shipped with my order are the correct ones, I tried the solution posted here and believe this to not be viable. There is still too much gap and if tightened it with surly be in compression and an opportunity to break. But even so I can not close the gap. Maybe I do not have the correct “thinner” nuts???

Perhaps there is a counter sink screw that can be used instead… Or a spacer… A counter sink screw head would be the only solution that keeps the horn at the exact same location as intended and perhaps programmed into kinematics…

If you got the Phoenix from us, with servos, the you should have received the thinner nuts, packaged in the 485 servo boxes. If you got the Phoenix without servos, and sourced them yourself, then you do not have the thinner nuts. Another option is to install the bearing with the screw installed from the bracket side, I.e. the screw head is on the inside , and the nut is on the outside.

Countersunk screw head? maybe… but you lost me on the IK part. :wink:
